The research included data studied from 309,000 people. Among these it found that those with no or few social relationships had shorter lifespans with a premature mortality risk of 50%. This was the same as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and with no physical activity or exercise. Moreover, being alone increased the risk of mental problems like depression which in turn impact physical health.

The reason was several biological and behavioral factors are at play where lack of human connections increased stress levels and had negative impact on arteries, gut function, immunity and insulin resistance.
