Solar powered car – The hope of future by Indian students
Everything is available to man. If you have money, you have everything at your door step, even if you do not have money instantly, there are companies that offer you devices at EMI, it ranges from household items to cars and bikes. Because of this scenario, many households possess more than 2 cars today. As the number of vehicles increase, the pollution level also increases. Taking charge of the situation, 27 students from the department of SolarMobil of the Manipal University, designed this prototypical solar car, with a go green concept. This car does not emit out anything harmful and is environment friendly. This classic car is coined as SERVe (Solar Electric Road Vehicle).
1 Outline about the car
The whole project of developing the car was started in the year 2012. The garage was at the Manipal University. Cars were the passion of the Team members, and the model was worked on with the go green concept. The whole process from cutting to welding was done only by the students. There are not much brands of solar cars available in the market right now. This is one passenger solo car which is available on a commercial purpose right now. The total manufacturing cost and the augmentation cost of the car was kept within 25 lakhs.
2 Facets of SERVe
The car is a two-seater, and weighs 590 kg and reaches up to 60 kilometer per hour with a speed of 30 kmph. The power storing capacity of the car is 6.5 kilo Wh and can prolong up to 150 kilo meter, if it is fully charged. The body of the car is made of glass fiber and armor-plated plastic. After testing, the car was found to suit the Indian roads.
Tailored Solar Boards: The panels delivered by Tata Power Solar are assembled with limpid solar cells, compressed with Aluminium sheets at the back and poly carbonate sheet at the front.
Unique Batteries: The Lithium ion battery carton when fully charged permits a speed of 150 km. This battery monitors the battery package and assures a safe journey.
Information Management: The prime units receive data from the Battery Management system as the car’s information system is managed by Rasberry-Pi.
3 Technical arrangements in the car
The Dimension of the car is 4400 x 1790 x 1380 mm and the Track width is 1650mm. The brake system is made of Dual Hydraulic Line System. The suspension of the vehicle is of Double Wishbone SLA type pushrod. The steering is supported with Rack and Pinion with zero-bump steer geometry.
4 Endorsement from Tata Power Solar
This car was made public, at the Headquarters of The Tata Power Solar. The Tata Power Solar helped with the funding and also provided solar panel for this creative process. The solar plate is designed in a way to suit the car’s exterior and its design is very sleek. The heft is only 35 kg, weighing much less than the conservative solar panels. The student team of Manipal University was motivated and provided with the components, and power required for rolling out the car. Not only that, the team was also supported by the team of engineers of Tata as well. Their requirements were changing, whenever the renovations were made to the product.
The Leader of the team Jeen Bannerjee said that, it was a big challenge for the whole team to convince the companies regarding their concept and get sponsorships for the make of the car. This project was backed by Coca-Cola, Element 14 and Agni Motors.
6 As a final point
Mr. Ashish Khanna, Executive Director and CEO of Tata Power Solar said that, they had provided the student team with the platform to showcase their passion and innovation and it is not a business plan. Moreover, he said that the company does not have any idea for time being to roll this car into the commercial market.
The student crew also looks forward to work with more organizations for their upcoming innovative projects and become a role model to the student world and inspire them with their innovative projects.
