Third grade Students response to Teacher’s unique homework left her in tears
School may be an enjoyable place but for some kids it is a sanctuary where kids hide their most heartrending secrets wondering if teacher knew.
School is the best time of a child’s life but what some teachers may not know is that a child’s behavior at school could well be the result of what he experiences at home. Before being judgmental from what you see. It’s imperative to get to the bottom of a child’s expressions, emotions and behavior.
Kylie Schwartz from Denver is one such teacher who set up a unique homework project that revealed a huge touching truth about every child in her class. The homework project for third graders was based upon a response to a line stating what if teacher knew. It was heartbreaking to read what the children wrote as a follow up to the single line “I Wish My Teacher Knew…”
1 I Don’t Get To See My Dad
“I wish my teacher knew that…My dad works two jobs and I don’t see him much”.
How frequent is this scenario. I wonder if dad was made to read this
2 I Want People To Understand Me
“I wish my teacher knew…..that my family and I live in a shelter.”
This must have hit the teacher like a bombshell to the heart. This is the plight of kids who unlike adults keep stuff within themselves and suffer silently.
3 I’m so Hungry
“I wish my teacher knew ….that we are low on money and have to go to a food bank to get food.”
This is the harsh truth about the plight of what kids have to face today. The sentence says it all.
4 This Is Why I Don’t Do My Do My Homework
“I wish my teacher knew….. I don’t have pencils at home to do my homework.”
As much as parents need to understand kids, this is a huge eye-opener for teachers to realize not always will kids fail to turn in homework because they’re lazy as is presumed.
5 If Only Teacher Knew I Am So Alone
“I wish my teacher knew….. I don’t have a friend to play with me.”
This is truly heartbreaking and there are no words to explain such a revelation
6 Why I get late for school
“I wish my teacher knew…. that my brother is breathing too hard and loud that I cannot sleep.”
Though this seems quite funny, it may be very traumatic for the child to be labeled a latecomer.
7 Excuse Me Maam
“I wish my teacher sometimes knew…. my reading log is not signed because my mom is not around a lot.”
The saddest problem with kids is the fact that some parents may be oblivious of their child’s needs being too caught up in their own lives.
8 This Is Why I Need Leave
“I wish Mrs. King knew that I worry because my mom is getting sick a lot and was in the hospital last night.”
This will leave any teacher speechless
9 I Miss Him a lot
“I wish my teacher knew how much I miss my dad because he got deported to Mexico when I was 3 years old and I haven’t seen him in 6 years…”
Although children remain silent to the world of adults, it doesn’t mean they don’t observe and ultimately they are the ones who are affected the most.
10 I Hate To Be Bullied
“I want my teacher to know it feels like the class picks on me. I hate that!”
This is one statement that should be read out to the whole school because bullying is one of the worst problems in schools today. This is definitely an appeal stating if teacher knew I was being bullied, she’d do something about it.
11 I Just Can’t Help Crying When I See Her
“I wish my teacher knew…..that my grandma had cancer, and her doctor had to cut cancer out. She got stitches in her arms.”
Every child loves their grandparents. This note says it all.
12 I Want Teacher’s Attention
“I wish my teacher knew ……I want my teacher to know that I like to draw.”
This kid is just craving for his teachers attention.
13 My Teacher Is The Best
“I wish my teacher knew…. she is like a mother to me. I don’t get to see my birth mom a lot.”
Aww, I bet when she read this the teacher must have burst into tears.
14 I’m Trying Because Of My Teacher
“I wish my teacher knew……. that even though sometimes I do not get good grades that I try. Also that I get stressed but when I come to your class I feel better.”
This is a big eye-opener for teachers to understand how some kids seek solace from school and are craving for a teachers love all because they don’t get it at home.
15 Teacher, I Love You
“I wish my teacher knew…… that I’m very proud of her because she never gives up on us and keeps being a great teacher, and I appreciate that. Thank you!”
This shows how much a good teacher is loved by her students. It also shows how much kids want to be heard and could be well wondering within themselves “if only teacher knew this was happening”. Kyle is a unique teacher who says that she struggles to understand her kids and the best way is to try and get to know them better. Kids sharing and revealing secrets about themselves is the best way to understand and love a child. Most children actually want to be heard and want their friends to know what they are going through in life.
Kyle has collected several of these responses and compiled them into a book titled “I Wish My Teacher Knew: How One Question Can Change Everything for Our Kids.”
