1 A Man Wanted To Divorce His Wife after Years of Marriage
A man tired of his marriage, despite having a selfless and devoted wife decided to break the news to her one night over dinner. He asked her for a divorce. Rather than creating an emotional outburst, which he expected, he received a gentle “why”?? The man couldn’t reply, and this angered his wife, who shouted “you are not a man’!! She didn’t speak to him and wept the entire night.
He on the other hand felt sorry and remorse for her, yet he didn’t feel love as he had fallen in love with someone else. He just couldn’t bring himself to explain how their marriage fell apart.
He drafted out the divorce papers which granted her, ownership of his house and a 30 percent share in his company. He just couldn’t reconcile himself to work on their relationship as she seemed a stranger to him. He was thoroughly in love with his girlfriend Jane. The woman cried in front of him which was as he had expected but the impending divorce became more of a reality and obsession with him. He just wanted to be out of his marriage.
2 These were her conditions
He returned home that night, exhausted after a day’s outing with Jane. His wife seemed to be writing out something, but he just wasn’t bothered. He was too tired and fell asleep. The next morning she presented him with a letter. It was her conditions for the divorce and that was all she wanted, not money or the share in his company.
She just wanted one month’s notice before the divorce during which he had to promise that they would live and act as a normal couple. She didn’t want to disrupt her son’s examinations, which were scheduled within a month. The man agreed to this condition as he felt that he too shouldn’t disrupt his son’s exams, however, his wife had a few more conditions. She wanted him to remember how he had carried her into the house on their wedding day. In the same manner he was to carry her from their bedroom to the front door every morning for a month. Although he felt she was crazy, he accepted the strange request.
3 When He Carried Her, He Began To Relive the Memories
Jane, his partner was filled with scorn for his wife, when she heard the conditions. She joked about the situation remarking. ‘No matter what tricks she applies, she has to face the divorce,’ she said scornfully.
The first day when he carried his wife from the bedroom to the front door, it was an awkward and clumsy situation. He hadn’t done that for many years since their marriage. However, it pleased their son immensely, who laughed and shouted for joy to see his father carrying his mother. He clapped exclaiming, ‘Daddy is holding mommy in his arms.’ Those words filled the man with a sense of foreboding and pain. His wife whispered softly to him requesting him not to tell their son about the divorce. Once they got to the front door, the couple left for work their separate ways.
The second day seemed easier. As she leaned against his chest, he got a whiff of her perfume which brought up a rush of memories. He realized in that moment how he hadn’t actually looked closely at his wife in several years. She had aged and wasn’t young. Her face showed the telltale signs of aging and her hair had strands of grey. For a fleeting moment he felt guilty as to the treatment he had meted out to his wife.
4 She Had Grown Thin and Weak yet He Never Noticed Until Now
When he carried her on the fourth day he felt a sense of longing for her. The feelings of the past returned for one brief intimate moment. She couldn’t find a suitable dress to wear that day as they had all seemed loose on her. It was then that he realized how thin she had grown. During the next week, he found the ordeal easier, simply because he actually experienced a sense of intimacy. Feelings were returning for his wife. He did not disclose this to either women and kept it to himself. He began to realize how much pain he had caused her and yet she kept the bitterness and hurt locked within her frail heart. He reached out and touched her gently on her head. It was a spontaneous action which he himself didn’t realize.
His thoughts were interrupted by his son who shouted ‘Dad, it’s time to carry mom out.’ It had become the highlight of the boy’s life. His mother hugged him and held him tightly. The man turned away thinking he may get emotional and change his mind. He then picked her up and carried her out again as was their daily ritual. She clasped his neck and he too held her close. It almost felt like their wedding day.
5 He Had Finally Made Up His Mind
On the last day, he felt bad at how light she had become. His heart felt heavy and it made it difficult for him to move. In his arms he realized how he missed the intimacy lacking from their life. He clutched her tight to him and said ‘I hadn’t noticed that our life lacked intimacy.’ Without hesitating, he put her down and rushed to his car speeding off all because he had just made up his mind and didn’t want to change it. He reached his office and rushed upstairs to meet Jane whom he was in love with. When she opened the door for him he blurted out, ‘Sorry, Jane, I do not want the divorce anymore.’
Jane was astonished and thought he was ill. He moved her hand away from his head and explained to her how this last month made him realize what was wrong in their marriage. It wasn’t lack of love. It was the lack of consideration for each other; it was the lack of not realizing how valuable their marriage was and how important they were to each other. It was that one month of carrying her every day which made him realize, how important his wife was to him.
6 This Is Precisely Why You Should Value Your Partner
Jane slapped him and left but yet he wasn’t affected, he had something very important to do. He decided to drive back home. Before doing so, he purchased a bouquet of flowers with a card that read “till death do us apart’. When he arrived at the doorstep bouquet in hand, he felt the love he had for her. It was as if some long lost memory had suddenly returned, bringing with it all the lost years of emotions and feelings which he never showed to his wife. When he ran up to the bedroom, he got the shock of his life. There to greet him was the lifeless body of his wife. She was dead!
The man’s wife was battling cancer all those years and he had no inkling about it. She knew she would die soon yet she sacrificed her last days shielding her family and son from the trauma of divorce. In the eyes of her son, his father would still remain ironically a loving husband.
7 Materialism Doesn’t Count in Marriage, It’s Your Partner
So you see! It isn’t the materialistic wealth that is important in a true relationship, it is the value of life and love. The little moments of intimacy, laughter and the time spent in each other’s company help us bond with one another and fill us with the ability to look and feel one another. It helps us value those feeling and realize how life would be if those feelings and emotions were absent. Happiness is that one person in your life trying to make you happy. Don’t allow yourself to realize the true value of your partner only when you see her empty chair.
