12 Signs That Show Your Partner Might Be Destroying Your Self-Esteem
Self-esteem is extremely important for a person, yet at the same time you could call it extremely fragile as well. But, don’t confuse self-esteem with self-confidence because they are two very different things. The best reference to highlight the differences between these two attributes can be observed from those celebrities who perform brilliantly in front of an audience of thousands but later damage themselves by indulging in an unhealthy lifestyle.
In relationships, partners have a great influence on each others’ self-esteem. They can either build-up their partner’s self-esteem or completely destroy it. Here are some signs that can tell you how your partner might be destroying your self-esteem, even though it might just be their way of trying to help you improve.
1 Re-checking or re-doing the things that you’ve already done
If you notice that your partner is always re-checking or re-doing everything you just did, then you will feel like you are incompetent and can’t even handle one simple thing. Double-checking things from time to time is alright, especially if it’s something to do with safety issues. However, if the job is done in a good way, you shouldn’t go about diminishing your partner’s efforts. Those who can’t help themselves with this kind of compulsive behavior, then re-check or re-do the things your partner did when they aren’t around.
2 They misplace your feelings
When your partner is stressed, upset, or worried about work or life in general, they shouldn’t take out their frustration on you. It’s wrong to do that and they shouldn’t make you feel like it’s your fault that they are unhappy, sad, or impatient. While you may just put up with it and accept it as them not liking you that much or that you simply can’t make them happy, you need to remember that their happiness is not your responsibility. It’s alright for them to express their feelings. But, to avoid a situation where you things may be taken personally due to lack of information, they need to communicate their feelings and thoughts properly.
3 They talk down to you
It’s an unpleasant thing when one adult talks down to another like they are a small child. It won’t matter if you are out in public or in private, so if your partner acts like this you are surely going to feel belittled and overly-embarrassed. If your partner speaks to you in this manner, you will feel demeaned and worthless. They are definitely not treating you with respect and that’s certainly not how you deserve to be treated.
4 Making decisions for you
You can be that partner who doesn’t really like making decisions. However, there can be moments which make you feel like the decision should be taken together. But, if your partner makes these kinds of important decisions on their own, then it could be an indicator that they think it’s not worth asking for your opinion on the matter. Such decisions can involve choosing where to go for a vacation, or even choosing new curtains for your apartment. They will decide everything on their own.
