11What an expert said?
Sriyanka Lahiri, Ph.D. works as an Assistant Professor in the University of Florida and is a small fruit crop entomologist. Entomologist are those scientists who study insects and Lahiri stated that SWD are more attracted towards strawberries because the sugar water solution and yeast is used for monitoring during the production.
Sriyanka Lahiri also talked about the precautions that can be taken in order to stop SWD from laying eggs on the fruit. Lahiri stated that simple cultural practices such as picking ripe fruits on time, burying rotten fruits, etc can help in controlling SWD as they are attracted towards the fruity odor.
13What Lahiri recommends?
Sriyanka Lahiri strongly advises to wash all the vegetables and fruits including strawberries before eating them. However, she also states that washing may not help in getting rid of worms as they are inside the fruit and soaking them in water may force some of them to come out.
But she also said that she is not aware of any benefit of adding salt in the water and also said that it may have an effect on the taste of the strawberry as well.
14What about consuming worms?
She stated that there is no risk in consuming some worms with the fruits and vegetables as till date it hasn’t been proved that they are harmful for health. Lahiri further stated that even if you eat some worms by mistake then you have taken some animal protein with your food.
