Is Rio proving to be disastrous for Athletes? The worst injuries of Rio Olympics
The Rio Olympics are well underway where emotional moments have been the order of the day. Just yesterday the 12th of August we saw Olympic history being made by a little athlete, the Ethiopian Almaz Ayana who not only smashed the world record but recorded the fastest race of all time in the women’s 10,000 meters.
But despite of the glory and success comes something even more traumatic than defeat. That is the unfortunate situation of being injured and Rio has witnessed some serious injuries. Here are ten of the most serious injuries in Rio 2106.
1 British Gymnast almost breaks her neck
British Gymnast Elle Downie took a nasty fall during her floor routine in the team qualifiers of the floor event. A miscalculation in a forward somersault ended in her landing on her neck. Although she was put in a wheel chair, she recovered soon after and completed her vault.
2 French Gymnast Breaks Leg in Two Parts
During The men’s vault French Gymnast Samir Ait said took such a nasty fall while performing his vault that the force snapped his shin and broke his leg. His foot was almost dangling at a right angle. The injury was so bad that the 26 year old suffered a double break ending his participation in the Olympics. To make things worse for said, the Olympic stretcher bearers dropped the poor guy while carrying him off.
3 Armenian Weightlifter Dislocates Elbow
While Armenian weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan was almost completing his 195kg clean and jerk, he dislocated his elbow after an abnormally long extension. He was witnessed screaming in pain. His coaches held their heads in their hands while he was removed t hospital because Andranik was one of the gold medal favorites in the event.
4 Italian Cyclist Medal Hopes Dashed With Road Crash
Vincenzo Nibali of Italy one of the leaders in the Tour de France and the favorite in the road race at Rio crashed with Richie Porte of Australia which resulted in several injuries at Rio including broken collar bones for both. The accident ended both cyclists’ dreams of a medal.
5 Australian Team Pursuit Crash at Velodrome
While training during the team pursuit event at race speed, the Australian team crashed resulting in a back injury for Mellissa Hoskins. She was taken of the Velodrome on a stretcher and rushed to Rio De Janeiro Hospital for treatment however nothing was broken. Hoskins was later released from the hospital and declared fit for her event. The other team members suffered burns and bruises.
6 Dutch Cyclist Takes Nasty Fall Down Descent
Among all the injuries at Rio this could well be the worst. Annemiek Van Leutens of the Nederlands had a nasty crash during the woman’s road race at Rio. It was extremely unfortunate when the cyclist lost control on a descent when she was on the last 10 Km despite leading in the event. She was rushed to hospital and treated for major concussion and three fractures in her spine.
