This is the reason why so many Earthquakes strike Japan

Have you ever wondered why Japan is being incessantly plagued with earthquakes? No!! It’s not divine wrath but factors entirely geographical. Just last week Japan was slammed again by a 7.4 earthquake that triggered minor tsunamis but thankfully there were no major damage.

The regions struck this time were the same which were devastated by the mega earthquake that caused frightening Tsunamis five years ago. This is the reason why earthquakes strike Japan frequently.

1 The destruction of 2011

In 2011 Japan was stuck by the mother of all earthquakes. A 9.0 which triggered giant tsunamis that devastated the country with scenes that looked like a Hollywood movie. Although that was dramatic it could be terrifying for those experiencing it on the ground.

Why is Japan so seismically active? It’s because it is located in the ring that is called the PACIFIC RING OF FIRE, the most active earthquake prone belt in the world.

2 The ring of fire

The ring of fire is an imaginary line shaped like a horseshoe and runs along the rim of the Pacific. It is caused because of the constant collision and shifting of tectonic plates beneath the Philippines Sea and Pacific Ocean

As per Douglas Given a geophysicist, “”The Earth’s surface is broken up into about a dozen or so major chunks that are all moving around. Where they all interact at their edges, interesting things happen.”

3 The reason for giant tsunamis

Tsunamis are not new to Japan. Throughout history the country has been plagued by tsunamis. In order for a tsunami to occur, the intensity of an earthquake should be at least 7 on the Richter scale. It should occur beneath the ocean and has to be shallow in nature.

The largest mega earthquake to strike Japan was on November 22, 2016 which measured 7.4. However it was the 2011 earthquake that caused the most destruction when waves of tsunamis struck inland.

4 Not just Japan but other countries too are at risk

It isn’t just why earthquakes strike Japan. Other countries to are at equal risk of large earthquakes. Within the ring of fire lie the regions of Hawaii, New Zealand, Alaska, and the west coasts of North and South America.
