What doctors initially thought was a case of pregnancy, turned out to be deadly for this beautiful woman!!
Sometimes even the doctors have to go through diagnosis that is confusing. There are many illnesses that have similar looking symptoms or diseases that mimic the symptoms of common illnesses and confuse the doctors. More often than not, doctors are able to catch the correct diagnosis and treat patients before it is too late for them to do anything.
But sometimes, even the doctors aren’t able to do anything as a misdiagnosis becomes too late to rectify and the patient loses his/her life. Something eerily similar happened with 22 year old Demi Wright.
1 Demi Wright
Demi Wright was a 22 year old make-up artist working in the UK. She was a graduate in performing arts from Colchester in Essex and was an up and coming talented make-up artist who was looking forward to settling with her boyfriend. The friends and family described her as a positive person and her father says that “She didn’t have a bad bone in her body, she had an infectious, beautiful smile and it showed her personality off.”
The only thing medically related to her was that she had a tumor on her liver when she was a child and she had to take regular medicines and checkups well into adulthood.
2 Primary Diagnosis
Last November, Demi started getting pains in her side. She tried to work with the pains, but when it became unbearable, she visited her doctors who saw during the checkups that Demi was emitting human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a hormone that is emitted by the female body during pregnancy.
The doctors got her admitted in the hospital for further tests and she spent the month in and out of hospitals giving blood for various tests with regards to HCG. But the ultrasound of Demi’s abdomen and uterus didn’t show any fetus. Then the medical surgery staff performed an emergency laparoscopic surgery to find out what happened and the news came out pretty bad.
3 Real Diagnosis
Eventually the laparoscopic surgery told the doctors that instead of being pregnant, Demi had a tumor on her liver. She had a form of cancer known as an adenocarcinoma and it had spread throughout her body. Her father Chris who was with her during the diagnosis said that, “I absolutely broke down and she patted the bed and told me to sit by her and she gave me a big hug and said, ‘It’s going to be okay.’ She was a real trooper.” She had a 12cm growth on her liver and the cancer had spread to every organ of her body and she was given the diagnosis of being terminally ill. But Demi really was a trooper and fighter; she did not cry even for once after learning that she was terminally ill.
4 The aftermath
Demi stayed hospitalized for three more weeks, with her condition deteriorating with every minute. She eventually passed away on 23rd February peacefully. Her parents have been grief stricken since then.
An Adenocarcinoma is a type of cancer that affects the glands inside various organs. It affects body parts such as colon, breasts, esophagus, lungs and prostate. The doctors got the wrong diagnosis of pregnancy because the tumor itself was emitting the hormones that are common with pregnancy.
Demi’s boyfriend Mitch says that he feels robbed saying ‘It needs to be stressed how much courage she had, she’s our inspiration now.’ Her parents have raised more than 2,300 pounds in her memory, which will be donated to the Cancer Research UK.
