This Family in Italy Feels No Pain and Scientists Have Finally Found Out The Reason Why

5Other family members possess the rare trait too

Not just Letizia but a total of six members of the family feel no pain. This includes Letizia, her two sons, her mother and her sister have all showed signs of being affected by what scientists today refer to as the Marsili pain syndrome. The family often experience undetected fractures, bone inflammation, burns and injuries without knowing anything. Letizia said that her son Ludovico who plays football has had several problems where “He rarely stays on the ground, even when he is knocked down. However, he has fragility at the ankles and he often suffers distortions, which are micro fractures.”In fact, recently X-rays have shown that he has lots of micro fractures in both ankles.”

Letizia’s younger son Bernado has also had calcification of the elbow without even realizing that it had broken in a bike accident. The Marsilis can neither feel the extremes of temperature so being too hot or too cold doesn’t affect them.

6Scientists are still perplexed

Scientists perplexed at this condition have for the past few years been studying and researching the Marsilis. They identified a gene variant that was isolated from blood samples of the family members called ZFHX2. Speaking in interviews molecular biologist James Cox from University College London said “We have spent several years trying to identify the gene that is the cause of this,” told The Independent. “This particular disorder may only be in one family.”

The scientists aren’t still clear as to how the mutation works but they assume that the gene variant disrupts how ZFHX2 regulates other genes linked to pain triggers and signaling. It is what could be giving the Marsilis their congenital insensitivity to pain and it is an extremely rare case.

7A gift and a curse

In the case of the Marsilis, the rare mutation could be both a gift and a curse. This is because the inability to interpret what pain represents means they won’t be aware of any serious conditions they could be suffering from or which could be developing in their bodies or even injuries that require instant medical attention.  This holds very true for Ludovico, Letizia’s eldest son who has had several micro fractures playing football as rays have revealed.

8The mother has had several fractures.

Letizia’s mother Domenica who is 78 has also experienced several fractures that has never healed well and have now hardened naturally. She even suffers burns while cooking bit never realizes it. Letizia’s sister Marie Elena has also damaged the top of her mouth by burning herself with hot beverages not realizing how hot they are. Her daughter Virginia also forgot once how her hand rested against ice for 20 minutes without her feeling anything.

The mother has had several fractures.
