This College Student constructed his own braces for $60 and he now has a fantastic smile
Orthodontics doesn’t come cheap. So what happens when you need braces and you can’t afford them?? Amos Dudley, a 24-year-old from New Jersey felt the pinch of braces costing him a fortune. But that didn’t cause him to go into depression. Amos Dudley went ahead and did the unthinkable. This college student constructed his own braces for $60.
Amos Dudley is a digital design scholar at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The only problem with Dudley’s looks according to him was his uneven teeth which made him extremely self-conscious. But what could he do about it; he just couldn’t afford the cost of a set of braces which were extremely expensive.
1 The need to build up his own braces!
To quote Dudley “They weren’t awful, but they were crooked enough to make me self-conscious.” A pair of braces would have cost him nothing less than $8000 and though he just didn’t have the means to afford them, he had an incredible idea. He would make his own.
He studied various images of costly braces. They had the same dimensions that could well be designed from a 3D printer. This is what gave Dudley the encouragement to envisage the fact that his idea was definitely feasible.
2 Amazing DIY Braces, Just Like The Real Thing!!
Dudley then 3D printed his own model and documented the entire DIY project on his personal blog. The braces cost him a paltry $60 but had the effect of the real thing. Dudley wore his braces for 16 weeks and the results are remarkable. His teeth are much straighter than before.
“I feel like I can freely smile again,” Dudley wrote on his blog after creating his own DIY braces. Dudley is extremely relieved because at one time he had stopped smiling being self-conscious of his teeth. Take a look at how he made his own braces to the proud owner of a great smile.
3 Here’s How He Made the Awesome DIY Braces
Using his school’s 3D printing equipment, he scanned and then printed models of his own teeth in different positions much the same way as a dentist would. Using the printed 3D models, he constructed a mould using non-toxic material. Using the moulds he made 12 different sets of braces. With the help of animation he successfully adjusted the braces according to his teeth. He could well be the only college student who has constructed his own braces.
Dudley said that he planned the path his teeth would take as a 3-D animation, so that they wouldn’t collide with each other along the pre-decided path. He used each frame of the animation as an aligner step and determined the number of steps (frames) he needed, by looking up at the maximum distance a tooth could be safely moved within a given period of time.
4 Today Dudley Can Smile Freely
Dudley is currently still wearing the last set of braces but the results of his project are phenomenal. However Dudley does not recommend others to follow his example because of several factors. Dudley of course did not think of consulting an orthodontist and acquired his information from extensive research in books and medical journals.
Dudley also claimed that though the project was a financially viable one, costing a fraction of a set of conventional braces, he did it as a challenge he set for himself. He felt he needed to utilize his design skills to take the risk and construct something extremely worthwhile and that’s exactly what he did. Dudley is one intelligent college student who constructed his own braces for an unbelievable 60$. He smiles freely now and looks great!!
Dudley’s spirit really shows that if one gets determined enough, and works hard towards achieving a goal with their full dedication, they can achieve anything, the impossible even!
