See How This Banana Duct-Taped To A Wall Was Worth $120,000
The joke got out of hand when people began taping things without using duct-tape or even a white canvas to showcase their creativity. The tag was that everything should be considered art and struggling artists who put their heart and soul into real art should be ignored for stuff like this.
This wasn’t the first time Cattelan went viral for his unusual artwork. He is quite famous for his 18-karat gold toilet titled “America”. This artwork went for $6 million. This artwork was then later stolen from England’s Blenheim Palace. But, this did not affect Cattelan in any way as he had already received his money.
This image would’ve been even better if it had a hot dog as that is the food sold at baseball games and it would’ve been more in line with the overall idea of the image. The food needs to be perishable which adds to the comedy that people are willing to pay a huge deal of money for something that will not last very long.
This one is quite distracting as it looks very Photoshopped and not like someone put in the effort to actually do it. The original image is a funny critique of the absurdities of art and capitalism. But unfortunately, it feels like having a cake and eating it yourself as the original image is also part of the problem.
Art is subjective and no one can truly define what is or isn’t art. Art is valuable and every artist certainly has a right and deserves to get paid for their hard work regardless of how effortless it may look. The debate whether this piece of art is good or bad will continue for a long time.
