Scientists make fantastic Discovery of Largest ever ancient Ship Graveyard in the Black Sea
Deep sea divers and marine adventure enthusiasts have much to rejoice because a spectacular discovery has just been made in the turquoise waters of the black sea. A Ship graveyard of no less than 60 ancient ships has been found lying on the bed of the seas dating back to the byzantine era which means 2,500 years of maritime history upto the 19th century just lying at the bottom of the sea.
The large variety of ships will attract gold hunters no doubt for bounty and treasure which may still be lying intact within the ruins of what is being called a ship graveyard.
1 Mega discovery of ancient ships was found by accident
The astonishing discovery was the result of a 3-year project undertaken by the University of Southampton’s Center for Maritime Archaeology titled Black Sea MAP. Till date it is the largest ever marine archaeological project to be undertaken but the surprising fact is that it was never meant to search for ships but rather as a project to map the sea floor.
2The seabed revealed a huge graveyard of ships
The study was an endeavor to make a total geophysical survey of the Black sea and the effects of climate change in respect to the changing environment along the Bulgarian coast. The researchers found more than they bargain for when they discovered an entirely different world existing there on the sea floor which turned out to be a graveyard of ancient ships.
3 Ships dating back to the 4th century
The earliest ship among the ruins dated back to the 4-5th century Rome. Some ships were found to belong to the 10th century Ottoman Empire. The ruins provide incredible insight of ancient maritime history, sea routes and traditions.
4 The largest discovery of ancient ships till date
The startling discovery is unparalleled in terms of providing historical information of warfare, trade and communication. It also now serves as a solid base confirming how ancient sea ships looked in respect to structure and design. Till now such features were only from guesswork. According to Dr. Kroum Batchvarov, from the University of Connecticut, ‘‘We have never seen anything like this before, this is history in the making unfolding before us.”
5 How the researchers scoured the sea floor
The project for surveying the seabed used ROV s or remote operated vehicles and High-resolution 3D cameras, scanners and laser lights. The main factor contributing to the ships excellent conditions was the anoxic feature of the black sea where organisms feeding on organic material cannot survive below 492 feet due to lack of light and oxygen.
Researchers recalled that one particular vessel still had its towers, bow and stern all intact as if watching a movie because of the ropes and carvings on its wooden deck.
6 The site will remain a secret for research and study
Although the mega find will generate much interest worldwide, the researchers are keeping the location of the ancient ship graveyard a secret to protect it from booty hunters. This will provide maritime historians a chance to study history that lies buried on the seafloor. The incredible discovery and the ensuing project will soon be made into a documentary and revealed to the world on Television.
