Massive Chunks From The Rocket Mission By China Almost Hits New York City
6This would not have happened with a core of this size
The rocket’s core stage had been said to measure around 100 feet or 30 meters long and 16 feet or 5 meters wide. The mass of this core is said to be approximately 20 metric tons. This was said to be the largest piece of junk to fall uncontrolled from low-Earth orbit in space in almost 30 years.
7This could have been dangerous
Normally, when there is a large piece of a rocket that is supposed to fall back to Earth there is a plan involved which allows it to safely fall back down. But, it seems like China did not have any plans. Had the core re-entered Earth’s atmosphere earlier or at a different degree, it could have hit New York City.
8They couldn’t track the wreckage
According to reports, the Chinese could not track where the wreckage would land due to its large size. Its descent was confirmed by the 18th Space Control Squadron, a unit of the US Air Force that tracks space debris in Earth’s orbit. Some of the places where they thought it would land included the US, Africa, and Australia.
9It flew over New York and L.A
According to reports, the core flew over Los Angeles and New York City before hitting the waters off the west coast of Mauritania. This could have easily been one of the worst uncontrolled descents of space wreckage had it hit a populated area. As we said earlier there is always a plan when heavy cores have to re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere.
10The destruction would’ve been bad
Experts have weighed in on the matter and have confirmed that if the debris had hit a populated area a building or two could have easily been destroyed along with the loss of lives and more property damage. They also confirmed that the chance of it landing in a populated area was only a vague possibility.
