The festival is celebrated before a winter sunrise. Punxsutawney Phil exits his burrow and if he sees his shadow and returns to his hole this means there are going to be six more weeks of winter-like weather. If he does not see his shadow and wanders out then this means there is going to be an early spring.

The festival begins at daybreak on February 2nd every year. Punxsutawney Phil wakes up and exits his burrow on Gobbler’s Knob which is located in a rural area about 2 miles (3 km) southeast of the town. This is where tries to find his shadow to make the prediction. His reaction and behavior are noted by his handlers and caregivers.
