1Turtles return to a beach in India after twenty years
A beach in Versova, Mumbai, was cleaned up in 2016. This beach used to be the birthplace of olive turtles. However, due to the garbage accumulation, the turtles had to move elsewhere. The initiative was taken by Afroz Shah, who started cleaning the beach by himself.
2How did this help?
Soon, people started joining in and together they removed over 5000 pieces of trash from the beach. Nearly 20 years later, turtles came back and laid eggs here last spring and the baby turtles, over a hundred in number, were safely escorted back into the Arabian Sea. The United Nations called this the “biggest beach cleaning project” ever.
Cleanman from Chelyabinsk started cleaning trash from forests and parks instead of just talking about it. He believes in taking action rather than just talking and planning. He wears a mask, so as not to gain attention for himself. He received attention when a group of Dutch travellers made a video about him. Soon he gained followers and became popular. He says, “Cleaning is easy and there is nothing humiliating about it!”
4Project Water Wells for Africa
Kurt Dalin visited Malawi in 1994 and was shocked to see people arguing over buckets of filthy water. He saw girls who had to walk for 10 hours or more to carry buckets of water on their heads. Dalin was moved and dug wells in the poorest and driest villages. In 4 years, 26000 people got access to clean water. Ten years later, 76 wells were dug and Water Wells for Africa was founded. Today, 300000 people are benefitting from the project.
5Eco-friendly fashion brands
Popular brands like Nike, Levi’s Zara, H&M and many more have been promoting eco-friendly ideas for many years. H&M is making a difference by replacing natural fur with organic cotton. M&S uses equipment which consumes less electricity and water. Zara makes eco-friendly clothing and even promotes separate trash cans in its stores.
