New California Declares Independence From California. Hopes To Become The 51st State
Believe it or not but there is a movement in the US called the California Movement. The movement founded by rural communities in California has gone one step ahead in declaring Independence from California in an attempt to become the 51st state of the US.
1California is governed by a tyranny
In a document released online on 15th January 2018, the group led in part by vice chairman Robert Paul Preston said that “The current state of California has become governed by a tyranny,” They described the present day California as a state which is ungovernable.
2A formal declaration of independence in Maryland
The group known as the California movement announced a formal declaration of Independence in a ceremony in Marysville, California on Monday the 13th. They feel that the present condition of California is ungovernable and their solution is to take over most of present day California as well as rural counties leaving the coastal urban areas to themselves.
3California decline inessential services
The reason the group gave for its “ungovernable” comment was years of taxation, regulation and mono party politics due to which the entire 58 counties are in a mess where there has been a decline in essential basic services which included education, law enforcement, health care and overall infrastructure of the state,
4A large organization with council of members
The group has organized themselves into as council of county representatives and various committees and plans to fashion their split on the lines of West Virginia according to a CBS affiliate who filmed the incident in a conference room.
The statement of independence read by founders Robert Paul Preston and Tom Reed said “Whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to seek a constitutional remedy to the abuse of powers,” the statement read, “We the people of the Counties of New California solemnly publish and declare these counties are, and of Right ought to be, a free and Independent State.”
5The California movement has posted throughout social media
New California also declared on its Facebook page that it is now a new state in development by “egregiously aggrieved Californians” exercising their constitutional rights to create a new state apart from the lawlessness and tyranny of California.
The founders are stating article 4 of the US constitution and its proposed 51 state plan which could convince the Californian legislature to spit the state and submit the resolution to congress. However New California’s work with the California state legislature won’t start till later in the year or early 2019.
6Founders want to try and govern themselves before interacting with state legislature
Founder Tom Reed said “We have to demonstrate that we can govern ourselves before we are allowed to govern,” Tom Reed, a founder, told the network.
Preston added that “There’s something wrong when you have a rural county such as this one, and you go down to Orange County which is mostly urban, and it has the same set of problems, and it happens because of how the state is being governed and taxed,”
7They plan on doing things legally
The only thing that sets the California separatist movement apart from the rest is that they plan on doing things the legal way through the constitution and the state legislature in the same way West Virginia was formed. However, where working was concerned, Reed declined that they would be working with the legislature except for taking it into account where the separation is concerned. “We have to demonstrate that [they] can govern [themselves] before [they] are allowed to govern.”
8A serious mindset although many feel it won’t be possible
Although the Californian movement is taking declaration of their independence seriously, many feel that their becoming the 51st state of the US is highly unlikely because it would go up for vote to the entire state of California and then approved by congress so the odds are extremely low. Several social media users expressed doubts at the success of the movement where some like @CGDurant said the longest of long shots. Having grown up there, both the urban and rural areas need each other,”
One twitter user by the handle@cuppingmaster read “This seems like all the bad CA secession ideas rolled into one.” The California movement isn’t the first to want a separate state. In early 2015, upstate New York also wanted to separate calling themselves New Amsterdam.
9A dream for a separate state
The California movement stands united in their dream of a separate state despite doubters, obstacles and the very long odds of the possibility of something like this happening. The group consists of committees and a council of country representatives but to engage with their state legislature may take the group almost 18 months’.
Earlier in 2014, Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tm Draper submitted a petition with signatures to split California into 6 states.
10What the constitution says
Under article 4 of the US constitution sec 3 and 4, new states can be admitted by the Congress into the union of states. No new states can be formed within the jurisdiction of any other state or by the junction of two more states without the permission of the state legislature and Congress.
Sec 4 reads “ The United States shall guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government, and shall protect each of them against invasion; and on application of the legislature, or of the executive (when the legislature cannot be convened) against domestic violence.”
11The declaration of independence for the 51st state
In the website of the new California movement, it mentions that New California has grown to 21 counties after a special meeting on January 9 2018. The counties that joined the movement were San Joaquin, Santa Cruz, Orange and imperial counties and more are likely to join. Another special meeting was held on January 11th 2018 to help counties send their members to the delegate’s convention for the declaration of Independence on January 13th 2018, in Marysville, CA.
