The Middle Child In America Is Going Extinct And Here’s How It Will Affect The World
9The qualities of middle children will remain
The qualities that define middle children won’t obviously disappear. However, as families are slowly shrinking, the number of middle children is slowly reducing and there is a reason to fear that soon there won’t be any more middle children.
10The biggest irony surrounding middle children
The biggest irony about middle children is that their positive qualities are not because of parental attention but parental inattention and neglect. Salmon says “The secret power of middles points away from the notion that successful parenting is all about time and attention.” What Salmon is promoting is the idea that the culture of today which is over parenting is becoming an obstacle in the development of the merits of the classic middle child since middle children achieve their merits from benign neglect.
11The traits of a middle child
Middle children are said to have many traits. These are:
- Middle children have strong friendships and relationships
- Middle children are great mediators
- Middle children are wonderful negotiators
- Middle children are easygoing and innovative
- Middle children are self-motivated and successful
- Middle children are good co-workers and don’t crack under pressure
12Middles form relationships easily but will they be around anymore?
Middles can easily form healthy relationships outside the home and fuse less with parents. They don’t take on too many family responsibilities like the youngest and neither are they dependent like he youngest. PsyD Katie Davis says that “They benefit from the emotional distance they need to differentiate themselves as individuals.” She also says “They are neither overcompensating in terms of taking on family responsibilities like the oldest sibling nor depending on others like the youngest,” She feels that middles who are less fused with parent’s grow up to be better adjusted and healthier adults.
It would be hard to live in a world without middle children. Maybe it’s time to celebrate the middle child more often since they won’t be around anymore.
