Massive Protest In Hong Kong Shows The World How To Protest With Discipline And Respect
Everyone knows that the go-to method of standing up against a certain rule issued by the government in any country is a protest by the people. We’ve seen it for decades as people in crowds march through the street voicing their opinion on the matter. The thing that we do not see is a peaceful protest.
This is what we saw when around 2 million people in the city of Hong Kong went out to protest. With a number that high, everyone was expecting a clash or violence to break out but what they saw was completely unbelievable. The amount of discipline and respect the protestors showed during this march was incredible and something that people can easily learn from.
1What was the protest about?
The Chinese Communist Party has been trying to impose their own will on the city and the people. To protest this, pro-democracy protests and civil disobedience has been seen throughout the city. The world got the first glimpse of the civil unrest in 2014’s ‘Umbrella Movement’ which lasted for 79 days.
2The protests now
Now the people are out once more but in larger numbers. Some have estimated the crowd was around 2 million people strong but instead of the wild violence we would normally expect from a group of people of this size, what we saw was the best demonstration of discipline, unity and respect for their city. This shows how peaceful these people really are even when they’re angry.
3The press show their discontent
There were many cases where journalists were being attacked without any reason by the Hong Kong police so, to show their discontent with the police forces all the journalists wore helmets, eye masks and reflective vests during press conferences. This was seen as a way for the journalists to mock the police forces.
4Keeping water at the ready
The people who were involved with the protest knew that tear gas could be used so they placed water bottles along the pavements in populated areas so that people could douse the tear gas grenades before they affect the masses. This showed how organized and thoughtful the people were.
5Participating even during exams
The main cause of this protest was the extradition bill which would give the authorities permission to take anyone they suspect to mainland China for questioning. This could be used against the people and could destroy their freedom. This is why even students at universities who had exams came out to protest while studying.
