Man Kept Rock For Years Thinking It Was Gold But It Turned Out Far More Valuable Than He Imagined
Have you ever heard about the Maryborough Meteorite? A study published in July 2019 provided a lot of insight about a meteorite discovered in Maryborough Regional Park, Melbourne, Australia but it wasn’t a boring straight forward discovery of a meteorite and the usual tests by experts, this was discovered by a man who didn’t even know it was a meteorite and kept the rock for a considerable amount of time at home only to get a shock later.
1An unusual rock found while prospecting in a park
David Hole was happily prospecting in Maryborough Regional Park near Melbourne Australia in 2015. Using a metal detector, he ultimately found something unusual. It was a reddish rock that was quite heavy and it rested in yellow-colored clay. Intrigued because of the unique color, he took it home thinking it to be a unique colored rock.
2He thought he had found gold nuggets
Maryborough is in the Goldfields region and it was the site of the Australian gold rush in the 19th century. David was excited on finding the rock and wondered what he would find. He tried prying the rock open thinking that he was definitely going to discover a gold vein or maybe gold nuggets inside the rock. He tried sawing it open, a drill, an angle grinder and everything else he could think of.
3The rock wouldn’t open even with a sledgehammer, it was so hard
He even trued a sledgehammer and dipped it in acid bit nothing doing. The rock held firm because it was no ordinary rock. David had no idea he was dealing with a meteorite and he was only going to know about it in years to come. According to Melbourne museum geologist Dermot Henry “It had this sculpted, dimpled look to it,” “That’s formed when they come through the atmosphere, they are melting on the outside, and the atmosphere sculpts them.”
