Johnson and Johnson Recalls 33,0000 Bottles of Baby Powder After Testing Positive for Cancer Causing Asbestos
Over the years there have been rumors of baby powder and talc putting people at risk of certain type of cancers and companies have also faced lawsuits over it but now there is no speculation and neither is there any myth associated with the new revelation that baby powder and no less than the Johnson and Johnson brand contains carcinogenic substances. The company has now recalled its baby powder after a sample collected by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) US, found traces of cancer-causing asbestos.
1The FDA revealed that one tested sample contained traces of asbestos
In spite of the company facing over 13K lawsuits from various people who claimed that the powder gave them cancer, it seems the company has done little to reduce the impact of such fears because now no less than the FDA has revealed after testing that a sample did contain asbestos. One wonders why the need to put asbestos in baby powder?
2The company has recalled 33, 0000 bottles of baby powder
On Friday the company voluntarily recalled almost 33000 containers of powder after the FDA action and the company said that it was recalling the batch out of “abundance of caution” and it stated that the amount of asbestos was sub trace and only limited to a single bottle. However, if the bottle checked by the FDA was an authentic one, then how logical is the assumption that only one bottle will contain asbestos and the others will not.
3Asbestos is a known carcinogen
It is widely known that asbestos is a known carcinogen that can cause some dangerous cancers like mesothelioma and thousands of people have been using it and also have sued Johnson and Johnson in the past claiming that the powder gave them cancer. At least 13,000 cases are pending against the company. Incidentally, mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the lining of the chest and those working in industries associated with asbestos are always at higher risk of contracting it.
4Johnson and Johnson says its products do not contain asbestos
In connection with the FDA tests, the company said that its products do not contain asbestos however the statement wasn’t enough to reduce the impact of the test financially because the company’s shares fell by 2.6% since Friday which means that the public may be responding and could be skeptical over the news.
