He dove into the winter water half naked to restore our faith in humanity. Respect!
It takes courage to be a true hero. Heroism is often defined by the greatness of your acts. It always requires a person to endure strong feats in order to be considered by many as a hero. Here we witness a Norwegian man save a life. Plunging into the freezing winter waters to save a drowning… duck! Drowning duck?! Precisely!
This 36-year old Norwegian, Lars Jorun Langoien, dove into freezing waters to rescue a drowning duck. Lars is a daredevil who tests his body on a regular basis in withstanding extremely cold weather. Lars wasn’t alone in this unusual hobby; in fact, he was with his fellow ice bathers whenever he goes out for that chilly swim. Lars, together with his badass companions, met up for their weekly ice-bathing session when their attention was caught by a duck taking a stroll.
1 Out on a Stroll and Ready For a Swim
Lars and his friends were amused at the lonesome duck walking over the ice. Their entertainment didn’t last long though, the ice broke under the duck and literally flipped the duck upside down. The drowning duck was stuck on the ice and couldn’t free himself from the extremely cold water. Lars’ companion froze in shock when he saw the drowning duck. He couldn’t even move a finger or blink an eye when he suddenly saw his friend jump into the freezing water.
Lars was all prepped up for his regular icy swim. Wearing his swimming trunks and nothing more, he was more than ready to go ice-dipping. At the sight of the drowning duck, Lars came into immediate rescue as he saw the pitiful animals struggling to flip itself right side up.
2 The Duck Fell Into the Icy Water
Submerged into the arctic waters of Norway, the drowning duck couldn’t do any better. It tried to flip. It tried to wiggle. It tried its best to get its webbed-foot free from the ice above. To no avail, the drowning duck kept struggling until Lars came to its rescue. Lars grabbed hold of the duck immediately and freed it from the water.
When Lars got the drowning duck out of danger, the duck was already unconscious. Much like a drowning person, Lars grabbed hold of a dry warm towel and wrapped the duck nicely. Carefully, he gave the duck a mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Mouth-to-mouth, you say?! YES! Lars gave the duck a short Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or what we call CPR in order to revive the duck.
3 The Stage of Revival: Lars performed CPR on the Duck
With a few short breaths, Lars was able to save the drowning duck and revive it. The duck was fine and back to complete health after drowning. Now, Lars and the duck established a strong friendship that no one would ever question.
Lars was named ‘King of the Ducks’ in his community. It may be an unusual rescue but it is a rescue all the same. A life was threatened and was saved by a brave soul— that is genuine heroism. Besides, if you witness a man like Lars to save a tiny living creature in times of distress, how much more if he finds a fellow human being in the same situation. You sure would have an immediate hero in that instance.
4 He was proclaimed as ‘The King of Ducks’
Lars Langoien did what he could to be a good person. No matter how big or how small his feats may be, he is still a person who was willing to save any being’s life. And if asked as to why he did it, his only response was, ‘It felt like the right thing to do.’ Spoken like a true hero.
To this date, Lars still maintains a good relationship with nature. He still goes on his regular chilly baths with his friends, maybe hoping for another life to be saved. His friends branded him as a hero. First was because he dove in without any preparation into the freezing cold water. Second was because he was quick to respond where his companions couldn’t even budge. Third was for the reason that he did what rare Good Samaritans would do. And lastly was simply of the fact that he would do such act for such a small creature, a drowning duck.
This simple yet inspiring story of a man throwing himself in harm’s way just to save a life is truly a feat that is to be remembered. Lars is not just an ice water swimmer but a life saver of sorts. This is what earned him the local title of ‘King of Ducks’ and the internet’s affection as the man who dove into the freezing waters for a drowning duck.
