Marty Becker, an author and dog expert says “All you have to do is look, watch, smell and you’ll realize that is not true.”They raid the garbage can. You know, we give each other a peck on the cheek when we say hello, they give each other a peck on the rear end.”

John Oxford, professor of virology and bacteriology at Queen Mary University in London provided an even grimmer picture about a dog licking your face. According to him, it isn’t just the saliva of the dog. Dogs spend most of their life sniffing nasty corners and dog droppings. This means their nose or muzzle is full of bacteria, viruses and germs of every sort. This could lead to a list of potential disease.

2 Dogs can carry drug resistant bacteria

One type of bacteria carried by a dog is Capnocytophaga Canimorsus. This is an organism present in the dog’s mouth and can cause a dangerous sepsis infection. Those afflicted with such an infection may display symptoms of other illnesses like fever, chills, sweats and lack of energy. However, the difference here is that with this type of infection, the onset of symptoms will be faster than those of a common illness. Ringworm is also another infection that can easily be transferred to you from your dog’s saliva.

3 Infants are more susceptible to bacteria from pets

Dogs carry MRSA or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. This is a bacteria that causes infections in different parts of the body and is very difficult to treat. Although it is present in dogs, it may not affect them but will affect humans. Staphylococcus aureus, another type of bacteria is also similar to MRSA and resistant to treatment.

One should also note that infants are more susceptible to being infected by dogs which is why you should avoid your dog licking your infant. Affection and love are welcome from both sides but we should never live in fear of being infected by our pets. Thus one should also keep a pet clean at all times and not allow dog to lick your face.
