One would never think that someone in a religious vocation would have any ties with entertainment or fame. However, that is not the case as in these exciting stories of clergy members who have all been exposed and even became well known due to their talents. Meet a nun who before her devotion to God kissed the King of Rock n Roll Elvis Presley or the priest from the Exorcist who is an actual priest and was brought on for his technical advice for the movie. This is some pretty cool stuff.
1 The Nun Who was Elvis’s First Kiss On-Screen
The past fifty-years Sister Dolores has devoted her life to God however this sweet, compassionate woman at one point was a famous well known Hollywood Actress. Back in the day she was known as Dolores Hart, the same actress that gave the king of Rock N Roll Elvis Pressley his first on-screen kiss. How cool is that? Though Sister has been hard at work for her vocation, she remains a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Sister Doloresis the only nun on the committee that is an Oscar voting member. In 2012 Sister Dolores walked down the famous Red Carpet for her acclaimed HBO documentary God Is the Bigger Elvis.
2 A Real Priest in the Movie the Exorcist
Reverend William O’Malley, who played Father Dyer in the movie The Exorcist,is, in fact,a real man of the cloth. Brought on to play the role of Father Dyer and for his technical advice on the concept of Exorcism he has acted in the past. Back in Rochester, New York ReverendO’ Malley performed in several plays where he taught English and Theology at McQuaid Jesuit High School for 22 years. Additionally the well-known actor and clergy menhas directed several musical and drama productions for the school. Every year O’Malley holds yearly screenings for the Exorcist. He further states that only eighty percent of what is seen in the movie is based on what inspired the story.
3 The Unfortunate Demise of a Nun Whose Claim to Fame Destroyed Her
This is the sad story of Sister Luc- Gabrielle who become well known after her song “Dominique” hit the top of the charts in the year 1963. Sister Luc-Gabrielle was not looking to be famous or well known. However, the Phillips Record Company saw the potential in the talented sister and offered her a recording contract. The Nun finally left the religious order after having received some contention from the Mother Superior of her religious order. She eventually went on to record another album titled, ” I Am Not A Star In Heaven”. Unfortunately for the former nun this album did not achieve the same level of success as her other music. Her downfall became too much for her as she suffered a nervous breakdown and tax problems. Sadly in 1985 Luc-Gabrielle and her lover of ten years committed suicide with alcohol and barbiturates.
4 Italian Nun Discovered by the Voice
The Voice found a unique yet talented sister during its 2014 season with Sister Cristina Succia. Sister Cristina Succia won the hearts of the judges with her outstanding performance of Alicia Keys hit song “No One.” Since winning in the competition the talented sister has recorded several songs including Madonna’s hit song “Like a Virgin.” Sister Succia has interpreted the song from a romantic aspect. She states it is a song that talks about starting over and forgetting about your past. Way to go Sister Succia.
5 Priest is Discovered for his Beautiful Voice
Father Ray Kelly, a priest for 25 years, was recently discovered after an attendee who attended at a wedding he presided over recorded his beautiful singing of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” For years, Father sang this song at weddings that he presided over. After his talent was recorded and posted to YouTube his gift spread quickly. He has since signed a contract with Universal Music in Ireland. Father Kelly is pursuing his career as a professional singer but is still devoted to his faith and his parishioners. He recently recorded a collection of songs that were a mix of gospel and spiritual music.
