When he heard that his son’s classmates were going hungry, Jonathan took it upon himself to alleviate the food shortage. Jonathan actually converted his farm into a huge soup kitchen, can you believe that??

Jonathan’s sprawling 36 acre farm was converted into a nonprofit organization that he named Brandywine Creek Farms. Hungry folks could come and grab as much as they wanted to eat. Jonathan estimated that his goal of donating 500,000 pounds of food to feed 135,000 people per month could be easily achieved given the huge production capacity of the farm.

4 Jonathans Vision: To Include the Entire Community to Fight Hunger

Jonathan’s ambitious project envisioned a larger operation. Jonathan’s vision was not just restricted to a handful of farmers. He managed to rope in various nonprofit organizations such as Kenneth Butler soup Kitchen, Gleaners and Midwest Food Barn as well as various charitable food distribution centers. The volunteers amongst this organization would help Jonathan ensure that his produce reached all of these organizations which feed the homeless and hungry.

Perhaps what influenced Jonathan was the fact that farms in Hancock and neighboring counties produced a massive amount of raw produce. Even if a part of it was donated it would go a long way in reducing hunger in Indiana.

5 Watch the Video and the Amazing Man Called Jonathan Lawler

Jonathan and his family lived in what is termed as America’s Corn Belt and yet his neighbors were suffering from lack of food. That was because they didn’t have the food that they could eat. They obviously produced tons of wheat, corn and soybean but nothing that they could eat. For Lawler it was easy to get anything that he didn’t have in his farm, from the supermarket, but for those without transportation, it was a 12 mile journey to the nearest department store. It was unbelievable and too much to bear for Jonathan.
