Doctors Say A Second Wave Of Coronavirus Will Probably Hit The US In The Fall. Here’s Why and How to Stop It.

8Stay at home orders should be reinforced

Poland said that “As cities reopen, local officials should make plans to quickly reissue stay-at-home orders or other strict social distancing measures in the future if needed. Dr. Helen Boucher, chief of the geographic medicine and infectious disease division at Tufts University Medical Center earlier said: “Health officials across the country must continue focusing on expanding coronavirus testing contact tracing and treatment. We hope we’ll have more tools in our toolbox, maybe we’ll have some treatments for COVID-19 by then, maybe we’ll have better diagnostics”.

9Vaccines maybe 12 to 18 months away

A vaccine has been estimated to be 12 to 18 months away by the Trump administration. However, some leaders in the field have argued that this timeline could be too fast. According to Dr. Boucher, the key to handling the coronavirus pandemic would be in improving how health workers can manage it. “So the country is ‘as prepared as we can be’ when it’s time to face an outbreak of both the coronavirus and the flu”.

Experts are of the belief that those who have recovered from the virus have possibly developed some sort of immunity. But, Poland says that it isn’t clear how strong this immunity actually is or how long it will last. The accuracy of antibody tests still remains inconsistent. “We are placing a lot of hope in that but we don’t have answers yet…This (virus) is only 16 weeks old so there’s a lot we don’t know yet”.

On Friday, the experimental anti-viral drug remdesivir was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in severe conditions. As per a government-funded study this drug was the first authorized treatment for COVID-19 was still far from a cure. Yet patients who took it recovered faster than patients who did not.

10Is there anywhere else where the virus has made a comeback?

Singapore has in recent weeks witnessed another dramatic spike in coronavirus infections, with thousands of new cases which were linked to clusters in foreign worker dormitories. During the first three months of the coronavirus pandemic, Singapore had initially been praised for its response and apparent ability to suppress infections. But, in April the number of cases skyrocketed. According to data from the John Hopkins University, the total cases climbed to 17,000 since March 17.

The government has attempted to isolate the dormitories, test workers and move the symptomatic patients into quarantine facilities to control the spread of the virus. Due to the cramp conditions in which workers live that make social distancing near impossible, the task has become far more challenging. A package of restrictions and new rules, combined with harsh punishments, called the ‘circuit breaker’, was instituted by the government.

The report in CNN said Hong Kong the semi-autonomous Chinese city which initially had a relatively small number of cases also witnessed a huge increase after it relaxed restrictions in March. When those residents who had left the city to work or study abroad or to seek safety when the city seemed destined for a major outbreak earlier in the year returned, the virus resurfaced with them. Thus most of the cases in Hong Kong were imported.
