The designer Stambolian, who had designed the dress revealed that the black dress was lying unworn in Diana’s closet for years as it was considered too bold for a royal to wear. This was further proof that Diana was moving away from her inhibited royal style which dictated that she ditch the off-shoulders and mini-dresses. The dress was a huge statement, and her stylist revealed that Diana wanted to look like a million dollars for the gala.

12The pearl necklace
The pearl necklace which Diana was seen wearing with the dress was a huge favourite of the Princess and she had worn it on several occasions. The seven-strand pearl choker had a huge sapphire in the middle and was surrounded by two lines of well-cut diamonds. The diamonds and the sapphires were originally on a brooch which was given to Diana as a wedding present by the Queen herself. Did you know pearls and sapphires were two of Diana’s favourite jewels? Of course, it went brilliantly with the elegant black dress which Diana wore to the gala.

Eleni Lynn, who curated an exhibition on Diana a few years back revealed that the payback dress was all about Diana’s evolution. “This was the very opposite of the ‘princess dressing’ that had made headlines in the 1980s. One of her favorite designers, David Sassoon, recalled that ‘there was a tremendous change from the shy little girl who I had initially dressed to this overtly glamorous woman,’” she said.
