COVID19 Is Now An Endemic Virus, Does This Mean It Will Never Go Away? Here’s What WHO Says
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the novel coronavirus which causes COVID-19 can become an endemic virus which may never go away. The WHO fears that there is a possibility that the virus is here to stay. The executive director of the World Health Organization’s Health Emergencies Programme shared an unsettling message earlier this week: “We may never know a world without COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus”.
1The virus can become another endemic community virus
In a press conference held on May 13, Dr. Ryan said- “It’s important to put this on the table: This virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities, and this virus may never go away. I don’t think anyone can predict when or if this disease will disappear”
2A vaccine is the only way to stop the virus
Since this is still a newly discovered coronavirus which has had such a huge impact on people worldwide for the first time ever, the only hope of eliminating it is by developing a vaccine. “But that vaccine will have to be highly effective, made available to everyone, and we will have to use it” said Dr. Ryan.
3The terms classifying the new coronavirus has been evolving ever since its outbreak
The terminology for describing the virus along with its impact has always evolved as the number of COVID-19 cases continues increasing around the world. It was first classified as an outbreak when it started after which it was labeled a pandemic once it spread worldwide. Now, it is close to being classified as an endemic since a cure or vaccine is still in the process of development.
