COVID toes aren’t being regarded as a confirmed symptom of the virus even though other dermatologists and podiatric associations have also noticed the same thing and observed an association between COVID 19 and the foot lesions. A study has also been published by the International Federation of Podiatrists who has described similar findings.

Notable, was a case of a 13-year-old boy who contracted lesions on both feet and who two days later showed symptoms of COVID 19 such as fever muscle pain, and headache. He also complained of intense burning and itching of the foot lesions. Unfortunately, he was never tested for COVID19 and neither did any of his family members complain of COVID 19 symptoms before he showed up. The boy’s lesions healed within a week according to the medical report.

6It could be the ability of the virus to cause inflammation

The American Academy of Dermatology has begun to keep its own registry of dermatological issues linked to COVID19 which also mentions COVID toes for a wider understanding. According to Nazanin Saedi, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Thomas Jefferson University feels it has something to do with the ability of the virus to trigger inflammation. “It can be a localized inflammation to the finger or toes. Or, it can be the inflammation-causing micro clots in the circulation.” Doctor Nazanin also says that COVID 19 is also causing a lot of blood clotting in those who are severely ill with the virus. “They see this in asymptomatic patients but also patients who are critically ill,” says Dr. Saedi.

7It could also be an immune response

Dermatologist Amy Paller MD from Northwestern Medicine said in a news release that the foot infection could actually be in immune response like Pernio which is a response to cold and results in a clampdown of small blood vessels. She feels it could be also happening in the case of COVID 19 where a similar creating a similar response because of the inflammation.
