An amazing Coral Reef discovered in the Amazon is home to many bizarre creatures

The Amazon seems keen on throwing up the most amazing surprises. First, it was a hidden sacred Boiling River discovered recently and now a coral reef? How on earth could a coral reef exist in a river system when such biological phenomena are integral to marine systems? But it’s true. Scientists have actually discovered one of the largest coral reefs existing right there beneath the muddy Amazon river.

The remarkable fact about the coral reef discovered in the Amazon is that it spreads over 3600 miles. That’s huge!! Even more astonishing is that it is an ecosystem unlike any other and is host to several weird and colorful creatures.

1 Amazon River Project Leads To Amazing Discovery

The amazing network of a large coral reef was uncovered just where the river’s freshwater empties itself into the Atlantic Ocean. The coral reef was discovered by Patricia Yager and her team of scientists from the Marine University of Georgia and the University of Rio de Janeiro. As the leader of an Amazon River project under the banner of the River Ocean Continuum, Yager’s intentions were to study and collect samples of species existing at the river’s mouth or the plume where it enters the Atlantic ocean. It was the keen memory of one of the team members, a Biologist, Roderick Moura who remembered a study he had come across way back in the 70’s.

The study mentioned the catching of reef fish in the Amazon which got him curious enough to try and locate the possibility of coral reef existing in the Amazon.

2 Massive Coral Reef beneath the Amazon with Bizarre Creatures

The awesome Amazon is the second largest river in the world. It contains 20 percent of The Earth’s freshwater. Biologists also believe the Amazon is home to many bizarre but undiscovered rare species and creatures.

Patricia Yager and her team used sound wave technology to locate the coral reefs. With pictures created of the river’s bed. they located sea bed samples as proof of the reefs’ existence. Their subsequent discovery excited them beyond words, to find the largest coral reef discovered in the Amazon. Not only is the extent of the reef the subject of awe and amazement, it was the vast array of marine life that existed there. Sponge eating fish, reef fish, sponges, algae and various species of coral. “We brought up the most amazing and colorful animals I had ever seen on an expedition,” Yager said.

3 Linked Reef Systems Stretching Into the Interior Of The Amazon

After cataloging the entire rainbow reef species which detailed the extent of the reef and its characteristics, the team published their findings in the April 22 issue of the journal Advance Sciences. The reef stretched 3600 square miles from French Guiana to the Brazilian state of Maranhao.

The nature of the reef changes with its southern edge continuing the most amount of coral and marine life due to the increased presence of sunlight. Towards the northern tip of the reef, the density of coral and marine life is extremely low. The dominant varieties of phenomena are sponges and reef species adapted to acquiring food delivered by the river. Despite the diversity, the reef systems are linked to each other.

4 Will the Reef Be Protected or Destroyed By Oil Exploration?

Although the scientific world is excited by the discovery of coral reef in the Amazon, the harsh threat of ultimate extinction of the reef system is a big possibility due to man’s commercial activity over ecosystems. Just as global warming is threatening coral reefs worldwide, so is man doing his part to threaten the existence of the amazing Amazonian coral reef by oil exploration which is planned to take place above the very same location.

One can well and truly deduct that the fascinating discovery of the coral reef below the Amazon will be short-lived and man’s destructive nature will make sure of that.
