Coronavirus is a word that people have come to fear this year. It began in December of 2019 and now has spread across the globe like wildfire. Being carried by unsuspecting victims and infecting more as days go by. There are currently over 2,800,000 confirmed cases. The death toll is about to reach 200,000 and over 700,000 have recovered. Wuhan in China was the first city to issue a lockdown and in April 2020 was the first city to lift the lockdown but now another city in China has imposed it.
Wuhan is the capital city of Hubei province in the People’s Republic of China. By the end of December 2019, it was the epicenter of one of the worst pandemics of the modern era, the coronavirus. No one could have expected how 2020 would begin but now mid-April the whole world is gripped in fear of this new deadly disease.
Wuhan is the largest city in Hubei and the most populous city in Central China. So, when it was the epicenter for the coronavirus the government was quick to impose a lockdown and restrict travel to and from the city. Wuhan and other Hubei cities were placed under lockdown for nearly three months to contain the disease.
3The people suffered
The people were asked to stay indoors during the lockdown which brought the city to a standstill as it was the only way to protect the people and stop the spread of the virus. This did affect the economy of the region and also many small industries that had to issue bankruptcy.
4It was finally lifted in April
On April 8, 2020, the Wuhan lockdown officially came to an end after no new domestic cases were reported in Hubei province. Unfortunately, people went back to disobeying public safety instructions issued by the government to maintain a safe distance from one another. Photos and videos went viral of thousands of people gathered in public places.
5A new lockdown
Harbin which is located in the north-eastern part of China recently announced that it was adopting quarantine measures. This means that the authority has banned the gathering of people in public areas and checkpoints have been set up at the airport and train stations to screen travelers to check if they are carrying the deadly virus.
