1 Child marriage

Child marriage still looms large in many countries despite laws warning against it. The practice is prevalent especially in countries of Asia and the Middle East. In most parts of Saudi Arabia and Yemen, girls who have hardly turned 10 are married off to men who are well in their 30’s.

UNICEF and Bridal Musings have tried to share the ill effects of child marriage through the a video which is going viral everywhere.

It is appalling to note that every year; there are more than 15 million children who are forced into marriage. The trend, instead of diminishing,is progressing with no immediate end in sight.Girls in Saudi Arabia and Yemen are being married off at the tender age of 9-10 to men aged 30 or more. The husband is made to promise that he will not touch the girl (his wife) inappropriately or in a sexual manner unless the latter reaches the age of maturity. And!! What do you think happens next? Do you think that men in their 30’s will keep up their promise to refrain from any physical act with the girl? Unfortunately, they don’t! The worst part is that they are not even punished for breaking their so called “promise.”

3 What UNICEF says…?

UNICEF and Bridal Musings have collaborated to create awareness among Americans about the vicious practice of child marriage that is still prevalent in many parts of the world. With the help of a video, they have tried to bring forth the horrors faced by a girl when she is married or rather sent off with a man much older to her.

UNICEF says, “The sad truth is that a girl who is married as a child is more likely to be taken out of school, experience domestic violence, and become infected with HIV/AIDS. She is more likely to have children when she herself is still a child and is far more likely to die due to complications in pregnancy and in childbirth.”

4 What is the video about?

The bride is 11 and groom is 35. The video shows how this little bride is getting ready to marry a man almost thrice her age. It does not show any violence or use any words; all it portrays is the stark reality! You can sense what this 11-year-old bride must be feeling while going through the wedding process. Her family can do nothing but participate timidly in the ceremony. And this is exactly what they do! They simply prepare for the wedding, get her all dressed up to be the bride to a man thrice her age. All this keeps happening and they just do not take into consideration the fears and insecurities their daughter is facing at that time. Though, this is just a video, but sadly this is the reality. Parents send their daughters away at such tender ages that their whole life gets destroyed. And this practice should come to an end as soon as possible if little girls are to be saved.
