Brace yourself to face a ‘mini ice-age’ from 2030s
In the coming 15 years, people residing in the northern hemisphere of the earth will have to face extremely cold winters, with freezing temperatures and the weather conditions would be such that it will be similar to ‘Maunder Minimum’ or the Little Ice Age, which lead to freezing conditions some 370 years ago.
1 The Previous Maunder Minimum
During 1645 and 1715, Europe and North America experienced freezing cold winters. The period was named Maunder Minimum, which indicated that there was low sunspot activity and the result was extremely cold winters throughout the northern hemisphere of the earth. In fact, the winters in London got so cold that the river Thames froze, and during the winter of 1683-1684, River Thames Frost Fairs were held. The river froze for about seven weeks and at this time, it was actually passable by foot.
2 Recent Findings
A team headed by Prof. Valentina Zharkova of the University of Northumbria have developed a model which produces unprecedentedly accurate results of the sun’s activities. They have come up with a prediction that the sun’s activities will reduce by 60%, and will lead to freezing weather conditions. They said that fluid movements within the sun, which are theoretically believed to create 11 year cycle changes in the weather, will converge in such a manner that the temperatures will fall dramatically in the 2030s.
3 Reason For the Mini Ice Age
Prof Valentina Zharkova in a presentation given to the National Astronomy Meeting in Llandudno, said that the conditions would be like that of the late 17th century. She said that during 2030 and 2040, two waves will emerge within the sun, which will be peaking at this time, and mirroring each other in the northern and southern hemispheres of the sun, and these waves will result in reduced sunspot activity. The reduced sunspot activities of the sun will lead to ice age kind of conditions in Europe and North America.
4 The movement of waves of the Sun
Some magnetic wave components appear in pairs, which get originated in the different layers of sun, and these waves keep fluctuating between northern and southern hemispheres of the sun. Now, when these waves are in strong interaction with one another, the sun’s activities are the highest, and when these waves are out of phase, then solar minimums occur. And during the full separation, Maunder Minimum occurs, leading to mini ice age conditions.
Although some researchers are saying that the Maunder Minimum kind of condition may not result in such cold winters as the earth has been warming up by the greenhouse gases, and in 370 years since the last Maunder Minimum, global warming has become a big issue. And it is being projected that the warming of the globe will keep accelerating and this might make the temperature drop due to less sunspot activity to a modest level.
Now we as of now can’t say, what exactly may happen in the 15 years, but what we can do is that we can brace ourselves, because winter is coming, and how! We all will have to do something to keep ourselves warm and safe during the sleeping years of the sun. Humanity has survived the previous little ice age and it has all the potential to survive even this. So let the tension evaporate and let the Thames Frost Fairs begin!
