Baby gorilla born through the most critical C-section delivery
The C-section is in fact the most common way to give birth these days among humans but what about a gorilla? Though caesarean birth among gorillas in captivity is not completely unheard of, but still it is a very new and unique thing to happen at the Bristol Zoo and it surely did take the staff members and everybody associated with the entire process into a trying challenge. The birth of the baby gorilla from mother Kera has been the labour of a team of experienced doctors and gorilla trainers.
1 First gorilla to be born through C-section
The baby gorilla which was born on 12th February is the first gorilla to be born through a caesarean operation at the Bristol zoo. The father of the baby gorilla is still not on public display and the mother is still recovering from the operation. The zoo authorities are very much overwhelmed by the success of the operation.
2 About the baby gorilla
The baby is born a female and it is little over 1 kg which is not at all a healthy weight for a new born baby gorilla and hence the baby had to be kept under close supervision the first few days after it was born. The baby gorilla is of western lowland breed and was born with breathing trouble and needed the help of vets before it could breathe independently. However after 20 days from its birth it is recovering and doing really well.
3 Why caesarean delivery?
The mother gorilla, Kera had a number of complications during her pregnancy which prompted the authorities of the zoo to consider C-section as an alternative for ensuring that the mother can safely give birth to the new born and that by no chance, the life of the mother and child is threatened in the whole process. The decision was not something to be taken very lightly and hence an entire team of vets and gynaecologists were employed for the caesarean delivery so that the whole procedure could be carried out safely.
4 The mother’s complications
Dr. David Cahill who is a gaenocologist carried out the C-section and according to him, the mother gorilla suffered from pre-eclampsia and the only way in which this condition can be treated is by getting the baby out of the womb. The baby too was showing signs of being sick in the ultrasounds of the uterus and hence performing the operation became even more essential.
5 Treating the baby
The first couple of days were particularly very critical for the baby since she had to be kept warm constantly and was fed formula milk. She was also taught to recognise people and to become alert and soon she was healthier than ever. Every doctor and zoo keeper who wereassociated with the surgery always kept close watch on the baby and the mother from time to time.
6 A critical and challenging operation
Beyond any doubt, this was one of the most critical and challenging phase that the doctors had to go through and every doctor and staff member associated with the process took it up as a challenge in their career. The major critical part of the entire process was to ensure that the mother gorilla is safe and alive so that the baby could also be saved.
7 The aftermath
The surgery was successful and the staff and doctors have released some really enchanting pictures of the baby gorilla and the doctors in the operation theatre. The video of the baby gorilla is a real treat for animal lovers. The humanity of the doctors is particularly notable and one can rightly say that they have accomplished the incredible.
8 The present condition
The mother is still recovering while the baby is healthier than before and the doctors make it a point to pay the duo a visit whenever they can. The staff members at the zoo are also taking special care of the mother and child.
It can be concluded that the beauty of such incredible happenings make us believe in humanity more than ever and that loving wildlife is as essential as loving oneself and your near and dear ones.
