Avoid This Type of Mask Because It May Harm You Instead of Protecting You from The Coronavirus
4What the Department of Health in India has to say
The India DGHS went on to mention that “It is to bring to your knowledge that the use of valved respirator N-95 masks is detrimental to the measures adopted for preventing the spread of coronavirus as it does not prevent the virus from escaping out of the mask.” Another part of the letter said “the ones with the valves or openings on the front are NOT safe, and may actually propel your germs further. “Valves of that type permit droplet release from the mask, putting others at risk,” the order stated.
5Virus can be transmitted through valve masks
Dr. Ali Raja, the executive vice-chair of the department of emergency medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School has also gone on record to say “The virus can be transmitted through the valves, which offer no filtration at all, “Any mask with a one-way valve is only going to protect the person wearing it. It won’t protect anyone around that person from potential exposure to virus particles they exhale,” he told Healthline. “It may give the people surrounding them a false sense of security.
According to Healthline, Dr. Jessica Malatay Rivera MS, a Microbiologist and contributor to the COVID tracking project went on to say that a mask with a valve makes it impossible to protect anyone. “If you don’t have anything filtering what’s going out, it’s kind of like your mouth is an open-air exhaust. And that’s the danger.”
6The San Francisco Fire Department is also expressed concern
The San Francisco Fire Department also posted a video on twitter showing how common such masks were becoming and that firefighters also had to cover the valve masks that they use with a second mask for their protection against Covid-19. The Department Director Adrienne Sims said “We put together this video because our firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics were coming on scene with COVID-positive patients who were wearing these masks. We wanted to show our first responders how to approach a patient who is wearing such a mask and how to protect themselves without touching the mask and contaminating their own personal protective equipment (PPE).”
63M valve masks weren’t designed for Covid-19
The tweet showed an example of a cool flow valve mask manufactured by 3M as an example. Countering this the company 3M said on their website that such masks were made to protect from “dust and certain particles encountered during sanding projects… grinding, sawing, sweeping, installation of fiberglass insulation.”
Doctor Raja said that these valve masks were designed for wearers to protect themselves and who were not at risk of transmitting infection to others. It made breathing easier and were ideal for hot and humid weather.
