According To Science, Here’s What Your Feelings Would Look Like
In case you didn’t know, the theory of the mind is the realization that you experience different mental states such as beliefs, desires, intentions, perspectives, emotions, and knowledge. It is also the understanding that others too experience such things and that they may be either similar or different to your own. The theory of the mind is one of the biggest questions that philosophers have been tackling for centuries. Is the experience of the world around us the same as others or is it different?
1Do people feel the same way we do?
The theory of mind is vital for our everyday lives and how we interact socially with others. We use it to judge and analyze the behavior of others. Do people experience the same intensity of love and happiness as us? What about other feelings like hunger and pain? The theory of the mind is very different from the philosophy of mind which is a branch of philosophy that studies the nature of the mind.
2The oldest philosophical question
Philosophers have been tackling the question of the theory of mind from different viewpoints but the answer is always elusive. The theory of mind is a presumption that others too have a mind and not a direct belief. This is because human beings can only be intuitive about their own mind. It is not possible to access the mind of another person. So it is assumed that others think similarly.
3How we think about others
The assumption that others behave in the same way as we, is based on our own social interaction and observations of others. The theory of mind enables us to predict another’s actions and based on a fixed pattern of behavior. A normal person possesses the ability to understand and attribute the mental state of other people as a cause and effect of their own behavior.
4Those who don’t possess this ability maybe be cognitively impaired
If a person does not possess this ability it is a sign of cognitive dysfunction or impairment. Because the theory of mind is basically the root of empathy. So the next time you meet someone who shows a lack of understanding of others and denying that others feel the same way they do, you know what to think about them. Such people may be brain retarded.
5Not everyone is unique where feelings are concerned
When it comes to feelings and emotions, not everyone is unique. This has been proved by researchers who have published a combined study involving three universities from Finland. The researchers used results of a survey they posted online which revealed that there was a connection between a hundred different physical sensations and feelings of a conscious, subjective nature. The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
