Krishna Reddy, a 13-year-old American kid of Indian origin from Wichita Falls, Texas has created a device that can state when a driver has consumed alcohol or used other drugs just by seeing how dilated his or her pupils are.
Reddy is one of 10 final contestants in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, which is an annual challenge for the designation of America’s Top Young Scientist and a $25,000 prize.
3 The competition
The Young Scientist Challenge is a youth science and engineering competition managed by Discovery Education and 3M for middle school students in the United States, which is comparable to the European Union Contest for Young Scientists. Students are tested each year on their ability to create a 1-2 minute video specifying their idea for a new kind of invention that is envisioned to answer a problematic circumstance in one of three given categories.
From all the entries, ten finalists are chosen annually to work alongside a 3M scientist in a summer mentorship program and they also get to take a trip to the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, MN in order to contest for the grand prize of $25,000 and also for the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”
4 How the instrument does works

The device works in the following way:
When the flashlight is kept up to the eye, the toilet roll helps to guide the light beam straight onto the pupil. At the precise moment, the digital camera is programmed to take video of the pupil as it constricts.
After that, the video is viewed using a piece of software code wrote by Reddy. The computer and the device process the amount of contraction of the pupil when the light is shone on it.

Until now it can only be used to tell whether a person has been drinking, doing recreational drugs, or if they’ve used certain banned painkillers, sleep pills, or amphetamines.
