10 Amazing underwater oddities
The oceans of Earth have not being explored fully by the mankind. Not only the deep waters, but sometimes one can find interesting things on the ocean floor near to the water levels. One is bound to encounter amazing and bizarre discoveries in these waters.
But not all discoveries are related to animals, some discoveries can be both amazing and unexplainable as to why and what are doing underwater.
Here are 10 such wonderful and mysterious discoveries found underwater.
1 Underwater Stonehenge
Lake Michigan in USA has a Stonehenge in middle of its floor underwater. No one knows what it is doing underwater, but most of them are sure that the mystery is bigger than what it looks like.
2 Underwater city in Cuba
In 2001, computer generated images from sonar showed some granite structures under the waters near Cuba 650 meters below the sea level.
Some have argued whether the structures are natural or man-made, as the dating found the structures to be around 50,000 years old.
3 Japan’s Yonaguni Monument
The Yonaguni monument is a submerged rock formation in Japan’s Ryuku islands. The monument consists of fine sandstones and mudstones laid neatly in a formation.
Though there is debate amongst scientists whether the formation is natural or man-made.
4 China’s ancient city
Recently an ancient submerged city was found in the waters of China’s Qiandao lake. The interesting thing is that the city was submerged underwater recently because a construction company flooded the city, creating a lake and filling it with water.
As if spiders were not enough on lands and in our houses, there is a species of spider that lives out its entire life underwater.
The species are called Diving Bell Spider and its found in the central Europe and north Asia. It traps air in a bubble which is held by its hair around its abdomen and legs. Good luck wading into the waters of Europe and Asia.
6 Apollo 11 machine part
E-Commerce giant Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos recently financed a underwater search and retrieve operation for an Apollo 11 mission’s shuttle engine. The engine was located by a group of researchers in the Atlantic Ocean.
Sinkholes are formed when the mud beneath a structure loosens and suddenly forms a big hole in the ground. There are bad enough on land, causing damage to live and property, but the biggest sinkhole is found underwater. It is called the Giant Blue Hole and is located near the coast of Belize. It is 300m across and 124 m deep.
8 Lost city of Heracleion
Heracleion, which was also known as the city of Thonis, vanished beneath the Mediterranean Sea some 1,200 years ago. But during the last decade, it was discovered almost in its entirety, submerged under 150 feet of water.
Archaeologists have found gold coins; remain of ships and statues up to 16ft in height from the bottom. They however are unavailable to solve the mystery as to how this city was submerged in the water.
9 The sunken city in Bay of Cambay – India
In 2002, 9,500 year old remains of a city were found submerged under 150 feet of water in the Gulf of Cambay, off the coast of Western India. The strange thing is that the city was submerged in the water when the ice caps melted during the last ice age.
Scientists and archaeologist have found structural and human remains from the site, which are inexplicably intact in nature.
10 Mysterious object in Baltic Sea
A Swedish based diving group Ocean X found a cylinder shaped object in the Baltic Sea in 2012. While its functions and working have not been known, many have claimed it to be of alien origin.
While others have claimed its nothing but a strange and unique rock formation in the sea.
