When Lisa Alamia awoke with a British accent, her family, though supportive were amazed at how her speech patterns had changed. What was wrong with Lisa?

1 When She Woke Up From Her Jaw Surgery, She Couldn’t Believe Herself

When she spoke in a British accent, she couldn’t believe her ears and neither did her children. All she had undergone was a regular jaw surgery, but somehow the operation and anesthetic involved had some impact on her brain. Lisa was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition called foreign accent syndrome. Lisa was alarmed and kept it a secret till revealing her condition on media recently. Her surgery had taken place six months ago and for all this time, Lisa, who had a regular Texan accent now spoke like a British lady.

2 An Extremely Rare Condition

Lisa’s condition, which is a foreign accent syndrome, is a rare condition which doctors attribute to a mini stroke and possible brain damage to a small extent. The condition is so rare that in the past century, only a hundred cases have been detected.

On a lighter note, Lisa sounds like a regular Mary Poppins, but was born and brought up in Texas. Ever since her condition, Lisa says that people in her own hometown, keep asking her where she’s from. It would obviously sound weird to anyone not knowing Lisa, how a Texan known for a typical southern drawl would end up speaking like a Brit.

3 An amusing problem at home

As for Lisa’s family, they too were shocked and alarmed. Her eldest daughter Kayla actually thought she was joking when Lisa showed her the diagnostic report of foreign accent syndrome. Neurologist Dr. Toby Yalto at the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital had no explanation how this woman awoke with a British accent. Because of the rarity of the condition, there is very little infrastructure relating to diagnostic procedures concerning the problem.

Despite undergoing several tests, doctors are yet to pinpoint the source of her condition. As for Lisa; it gets difficult at times for her children to understand certain words which she pronounces like a typical British woman. The disadvantage of suffering from foreign accent syndrome is that a patient also forgets the correct usage of grammar and several words used, which she spoke in her original accent.
