Top 10 Oldest People in the World

The idea of long and happy life unfortunately isn’t available for everyone. That is not saying that once you get old, you can’t have a happy life. Many people have found that living in an assisted living facility like Bethany Homes can let them enjoy themselves as they grow older. However, not everyone can live to be 100+. There are a few lucky people who managed to live for more than one century and be witnesses of great historical happenings but as well as deaths of dear people. People who lived for more than hundred years are called centenarians, and on the list bellow we present you some of the oldest people in the world.

#1. Kamato Hongo 1887-2003

This woman lived for 116 years and 45 days. She was born on the island of Tokunoshima and later moved to Kagoshima where she spent her life with her daughter. She lived through two World Wars, and for a year she was the world’s oldest person.

#2. Carrie C. White 1874-1991 (116 years and 88 days)

The Guinness World’s Records recognized her as the oldest person in the world when she turned 114 in 1988. She spent her old days in a institution in Florida because of survived break down.

#3. Elizabeth Bolden 1890 -2006 (116 years and 118 days)

This lady’s documents weren’t in order for confirming her actual age. She was born in a family of freed slaves in Somerville, Tennessee. She had seven children, 40 grand children, 75 great grandchildren and 150 great-great grandchildren and 220 great-great-great grandchildren. That was some really big family, all thanks to this lady.

#4. Tane Ikai – 1879 – 1995

She lived for 116 years and 175 days. She outlived her children and spent her old age in a retirement home where she enjoyed pottery and sewing. When she was 113 she survived a stroke and spent her last three years of life, tied in bed.

#5. Maria Esther Heredia de Capovilla

She lived for 116 years and 347 days, so almost 117 years. This lady was born in Ecuador and in that country she is recognized as the oldest person ever. She didn’t smoke nor consumed alcohol. At the age of 116 she had good health, was able to watch TV, read and walk without cane. Unfortunately, she caught pneumonia just a month and a half before her 117 birthday and didn’t survive.

#6. Marie-Louise Meilleur

117 years and 280 days old, she was born in 1880 and died in 1998. She is still considered as the oldest Canadian woman in the history of the country. She was spending her last years in the same nursery home with her son and her oldest daughter, both old people over 80 and 90 years. She was a heavy smoker but she was a vegetarian.

#7. Lucy Hannah – 1885 -1993

Lucy lived for 117 years and 248 days and was one of the oldest African Americans in USA. (There is no available picture of her on the Internet)

#8. Sarah Knauss – 1880 – 1999

Sarah lived for 119 years (this is hard to even imagine how long it is) and 97 days. Her daughter, who also lived up to 101, said that her mother was a very calm person without stresses and that she believed that was the main reason for her long life. Sarah was a homemaker who when asked if it is good to live a good life, she answered that she enjoyed hers because she was healthy and vital. She died peacefully in 1999 and there weren’t any health problems. According to the doctors she just “expired”. She died on December 30th. If she lived for few more days she would have been a person who was born and lived in three different centuries.

#9. Shigechiyo Izumi – 1865 – 1986

This only man on the list, lived for 120 years and 237 days. His documents of birth were valid which makes him the oldest man in Japan and in the world (considering the fact that women rule with this list). He said that he started working when he was six and kept working physical work until he was 105 years old. He believed that his long life was just a will of Buddha and the sun.

#10. Jeanne Calment – 1875 – 1997

She reaches the top on the list with 122 years and 164 days of life. This French woman had no living relatives when she turned 90 years of age, so she made a deal to the lawyer Andrea-Francois Raffray. It was a reverse mortgage, because he agreed to pay her 2500 francs every month till the day she dies. But, he made pretty bad deal because she didn’t die for the next 32 years. The man ended up spending about 180 000 dollars which was double the worth of her apartment.
Jeanne was still able to ride a bicycle when she was 100 years old and smoked until she turned 117 years. She claimed that her good skin was because she was using olive oil. Also, she enjoyed one and ate around one kilogram of chocolate per week.
