This man lost an eye due to cheap contact lenses
People like to experiment with their looks and for that they sometimes buy cheap products, thinking that this is just an experiment. But they don’t think about the consequences of using such bad quality products, whose usefulness just can’t be trusted.
What they don’t realize is that just to save a few bucks, they might have to pay much more later on. This thing is more applicable to the things that are connected to our body like hearing aids, temporary cosmetic procedures like piercings, and contact lenses.
An example of this is the following experience of a 23-year-old man who lost vision in one of his eyes thanks to a pair of cheap contact lenses.
1 The person
The person in question is 23-years-old Julian Hamlin, who decided to go funky for Halloween wearing a pair of cheap contact lenses brought at a gas station store. He says that he had brought a $15 contact lenses at a gas station in 2010.
He wore them every day and even took care to disinfect them before wearing and after removing them each night.
He wore the same brand of lenses for 2 years, but one day in 2012, he woke up with a severe eye infection in his left eye.
2 What had happened?
Hamlin says, “It was so out of the blue. I just woke up and my eye felt weird, so I went to the doctor, but he thought it was pinkeye.” But unfortunately Hamlin lost vision of his left eye and in the hospital, it was found that he had severe corneal ulcer due to the infection.
Hamlin later developed glaucoma due to the constant pressure on his eye. Since 2012, he has had 15 surgeries and 7 corneal transplants and experiences pain every day in his eye. The vision in his eye is still blurry at best and he has spent money to the tune of $250,000 in the form of medical help.
He says about his horrifying experience, “My left eye is completely blurry; it’s been a big transition,”. Hamlin, who has also suffered unemployment and emotional pain due to his injuries said, “I’ve had to miss so many days of work, and I can’t lift anything over 25 pounds because it increases the pressure in my eyes, so I’m limited in my jobs,”.
He has to wear an eye-patch of sunglasses in event of him leaving his home during daytime. Currently he is working on reducing and controlling his glaucoma and tries to remain healthy for the corneal transplants to work. He hopes to get his eyesight back to a level where he can get corrective glasses fitted in order to see clearly.
3 Why you should avoid cheap lenses?
Hamlin does give some advice to other people,”Please do not wear these on Halloween — it might be more difficult and expensive to get a prescription, but a $10 pair isn’t worth the risk and pain.”
Actually selling such type of cheap contact lenses is illegal in any shop or store without a prescription. These lenses are mostly made in countries other than the USA and are often made of cheap material and are not approved by the FDA for sale. But since they are cheap, people buy them for wearing them for fun during Halloween.
Thomas Steinemann, M.D American Academy of Ophthalmology and professor of ophthalmology says, “If contact lenses don’t fit the shape of the eye properly, they can cause discomfort, pain, and scratching.”
4 Precautions to take
So people if you plan on wearing cosmetic lenses, buy the lenses from retailers who require prescriptions and the lenses should be approved by the FDA. Also get a valid prescription from a doctor. Only an eye health professional can get you fitted with correct size and make of lenses.
Immediately see a doctor if you experience irritation, swelling, scratching, pain or discharge from the lenses. Make sure to disinfect the lenses before and after each use. And do not use expired products ever.
Those cheap contact lenses cost this young man his one eye, please make sure you do not get into the trap of buying and using cheap products, you may be happy for that time , but will have to suffer in the long run. Always go for quality products and be safe and healthy.
