7 Things Your Body Odor Reveals About Your Health

Body odor is when your body gives off an unpleasant or foul scent. One of the main causes of body odor is sweat. But this may be incorrect since sweat is virtually odorless to humans. The bad smell is actually the result of rapidly multiplying bacteria in the sweat breaking down the sweat into acids.

If you do have bad body odor then you should be a bit concerned. In fact, it can tell you a lot about your current health condition or it can even be an indicator of health problems like liver problems and diabetes. This unpleasant smell emanating from your body can be caused due to various reasons.

Causes of body odor

Bacteria present in your sweat are the main reason behind body odor. The bacteria break down sweat into acid which gives off a very unpleasant smell. These bacteria are linked to the apocrine glands which are also known as the scent glands for the body.

The apocrine glands are located in the armpits, genital area, breasts, ear and eyelids. In the breast they tend to secrete fat droplets into breast milk. Inside the ear, these are responsible for the formation of earwax. But, in the skin and the eyelids, these glands are the basic sweat glands.

The apocrine glands which are located in the skin are usually in the armpits, groin, and around the nipples. The sweat produced by the apocrine glands on the skin is high in protein which can easily be broken down by bacteria. The end result is the strong body odor which is seemingly very unpleasant.
