Study reveals that women who have babies later may live longer!
Since generations, the immense wisdom regarding the ill effects of having a child later in life, have been passed onto us. Often, many of us tend to marry early even when uncertain and confused, because we are scared to delay our first pregnancy. It is the first time in the history of women’s health that something positive has been revealed about women who have babies later.
1 Study Conducted on Longevity
The Menopause Journal conducted a study on longevity and the results revealed something unexpected. It was a Long Life Family Study conducted on 462 women. The study revealed that women who conceived normally after the age of 33 showed double the chances to live upto the age of 95. While most studies in this league focus their attention on a woman’s health during her first pregnancy, this study paid attention to a woman’s health when she gave birth to her last child. It is still not clear whether this should be regarded as an indication that having the last child at an older age would increase your lifespan. The opinion may vary based on the perspective.
2 What the Experts Have To Say?
Different experts look at the result of the study differently. The conclusion derived is thus different in each case. The director of the Longevity Genes Project, NirBarzilai, is also the director at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Institute of Ageing and Research. He reveals that since the study was conducted on women with longevity genes, it could mean two things. It could either mean that women who had babies later had chances of living longer. On the other hand, it may also mean that since the women who were evaluated were those with longevity genes, they aged slower than others and hence their reproductive health was also better at a later age.
Einstein School’s Siobhan Dolan, who is a professor of gynaecology and obstetrics, also reveals her views. She says that women should not delay their pregnancy believing this study blindly. She says that women need to gauge the benefits against the risks before running into any foolish conclusions. Women should also focus on aspects like maintaining a proper body weight and giving up habits like smoking in order to have a healthy child.
3 Does that mean Women Should Delay Their Pregnancy?
Since the result of this study is not conclusive, women should not delay their pregnancy unnecessarily. They need to weigh the different risks of delaying their pregnancy before deciding when to have a child. It has already been proven that there are greater chances of genetic conditions like Down’s Syndrome when the pregnancy is delayed. The biological clock may also run out and a woman’s fertility will reduce with age. It is thus better to avoid any such risks.
4 What could be the reasons for longevity of women who have babies later?
Apart from the scientific research and study that shows a link between older mothers and longevity, there could be other reasons why women who have babies later tend to live longer or age slower. Here we have listed out the most logical reasons:
When a woman marries in her early twenties, she has just completed her studies and her career is not yet decided. At this stage, marriage brings in a lot of anxiety and stress. The woman is not economically independent and if the relation is not successful, the whole life of the woman can be ruined.
In the late twenties, women have just started off and are struggling to establish their career. A pregnancy at this stage can mean a lot of financial pressure on the couple. The stress and tension in either of the cases are sure to affect the health of a woman and her longevity.
Women who have children after their career is perfectly established have to just worry about their health. Their financial situation is much better and they can actually afford to have a baby now.
