An eight-year research study that sought to analyze the human genome including the molecules that regulate it has thrown up something fantastic where cancer cells are concerned. The Northwestern team has discovered a pathway that can be programmed to self-destruct and destroy any type of cancer cell. What’s great about it is that the process is foolproof. If this is true and if it can be applied to human trials and subsequent treatment, it may well be the breakthrough of the century.

2Tiny naturally produced molecules possess cancerkilling properties

The mechanism for self destruct requires a certain process. It involves production of siRNA’s or tiny RNA molecules that trigger the self-destruct process of the cancer cells while not having any effect on healthy cells. These siRNA’s are necessary for stopping multiple genes required for the increase and production of rapidly growing malignant cancer cells.

Two recent studies have given research leader Marcus Peter and team several insights to observe how siRNA’s initiate the fatal process of events which have been named DISE or “death by induces survival gene elimination”

3Identification of nucleotides necessary for the fatal activity

Not only has the team discovered and observed the process of DISE, they have also identified six nucleotide long sequences which are essential for the fatal activity. This could have phenomenal potential where medication such as chemotherapy won’t be necessary. All it would require is a catalyst to trigger the siRNAs in one’s body into action by stimulating the nucleotide sequence.

4What are siRNA’s?

SiRNAs are also called small interfering RNA (ribonucleic acid) which are a class of double-stranded RNA molecules operating within an RNA pathway. These interfere with gene expression (the process where information of a gene is used for synthesis of a gene product) of specific cells. SiRNA can also be introduced into cells by a process called transfection

5DISE sequences are present in our RNA

The scientists examined nucleotide sequences of non-coding RNA molecules which are produced naturally in the body to prevent various gene expressions. Non-coding RNA molecules are those which do not get translated into protein. They found that sequences associated with DISE process were present at just one end of several RNA strands that suppressed tumors.
