MRI result shows Cancer cells thrive on processed sugar
All of us love to live a healthy life. We always strive to live a healthy life and only way to do is to change the diet. It is easy to say but all the fast food lovers and fans of sugary soft drinks and coffee will definitely beg to differ on that point.
But once they get to know what their diet is doing to their body, they know they had to do change it for their own good. One such food is sugar and especially the processed sugar can cause some serious harm to people who consume them.
1 Processed sugar
Processed sugar is sugar that has been refined so that it has a smooth texture and flavor. One example of this type of processed sugar is the white sugar. This sugar is used in baking and as a sweetener all over the world.
This is because one can control its behaviour and is predictable. Some people believe that processed sugar is the healthier sugar as it contains more vitamins and mineral than what are present in the natural sugar.
2 How it can be harmful
Over consumption of this processed sugar can be very harmful. It can cause tooth decay, development of diabetes and similar health problems. This type of sugar is considered empty because the process of refinement actually removes all traces of any kinds of nutrients present in the sugar and what remains are just sweetening elements.
That means our body actually wastes resources in trying to break down this sugar in hopes of nutrients.
3 Cancer cells and sugar
University College London (UCL) in the U.K. tested a new cancer discovery technique that involves utilizing a unique form of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
The scientists prepared a MRI scanner to look specifically for glucose in the body. Later the results revealed that cancer tumors – which have been proven to feed off sugar – light up brightly as they contained high amounts of sugar.
Hence it was proved that processed sugar was the main reason behind the spread and growth of cancer cells in the human body.
Explained by a recent UCL announcement, “The new technique, called ‘glucose chemical exchange saturation transfer’ (glucoCEST), is based on the fact that tumors consume much more glucose (a type of sugar) than normal, healthy tissues in order to sustain their growth.” The university gave an update saying that the tumors appear as “bright images” on the scanner.
4 The Method to scan for cancer
The traditional method to scan for cancer using an MRI is to look for tumors by using low dose radiation injections as radiation is also a known cause of cancer. But the drawback of using such an injection is the potential side effects of the radiation on the body. But it is a necessary evil since it encourages the cancer cells to expand and multiply, so that they can be detected by the doctors.
Now sugar can be officially added to that list, as Dr. Simon Walker-Samuel, lead researcher, UCL Center for Advanced Biomedical Imaging (CABI) explains, “The method uses an injection of normal sugar and could offer a cheap, safe alternative to existing methods for detecting tumors, which require the injection of radioactive material,”
The glucoCEST method used the amount of sugar that is present in just half a chocolate bar in order to detect the cancer cells.
5 How to avoid processed sugar
We know sugar is important for our body, but processed sugar should be kept away from our diet as much as possible. Here are some ways to kick that processed sugar habit.
Stop drinking any soda of any kind. Not even the sugarless/sugar free one, because it contains stevia, which is considered as toxic. Try and eat as much as natural and organic food and fruits as possible. You can get the required amount of sugar from fruits and food that you eat.
You will get that craving for sugar, when you decide to wean yourself off it. Try and fight that feeling. Try and eat or drink things like coconut water, fruits etc. as natural sugar will help you deal with cravings.
