Is excess artificial light exposure making your kid overweight?
Trust researchers and scientists to always come up with stunning new discoveries. In a latest study, we have read the revelation that kids who are spending excess time on mobiles, gadgets and are exposed to television tend to put on more weight. Therefore, the cause that leads to your kid becoming overweight is no more restricted to limitations of physical activity or poor dietary habits alone. Over exposure to artificial light also causes them to become overweight.
1 What the study has to say?
The new study reveals that the intensity of the light and the timing of exposure to the same are important in terms of metabolic function regulation as well as contribution to the weight status.
Cassandra Pattinson, a researcher from Cassandra Pattinson, Brisbane in Australia says that any kind of artificial lighting-even night lights, TV, mobile light and so on, can mean that kids are exposed to the risk of becoming overweight soon. She added that children in today’s generation have more exposure to environmental and artificial lights more than what kids from the older generations ever had.
2 What Is With Light And BMI?
The researchers engaged in the study of children and their exposure to artificial light over a bi-weekly span of time. The children who were a part of this study were between the ages of three and five. The researchers monitored and tracked the sleep patterns, activity and timings for all kids over two whole weeks. They also tracked the light explore to artificial lights exposed to these kids besides taking note of their height and weights. The data was followed up by comparing the body mass index after a year of such tracking.
Right during the initial tracking, researchers came to the conclusion that very moderate light exposure and intensity at the beginning of the day saw an association with a higher body mass index. On the other hand, children who were exposed to maximum light—both indoors and outdoors – during the time after noon, were not overweight. Rather, they were slimmer.
3 Understanding The Body Clock- How It Works?
During the follow-up session, a year later, those children who were exposed to more light at the early part of the day were overweight. They had a higher body mass index. The reason behind this has been explained by Pattinson as quoted here, “The circadian clock — also known as the internal body clock — is primarily driven by our exposure to light and the timing of when that happens. It impacts on sleep patterns, weight gain or loss, hormonal changes and our mood.”
Since we do not live in a world that bases all its activity on the movement of the sun, there is a lot of change that the human body is being subjected to.Who thought that the amount of exposure to artificial light could dictate if somebody was overweight or not? The artificial lights are a boon but also allow individuals to work late in the night or very early in the morning. This causes disruption in the natural body clock of individuals. Perhaps, this disrupted clock takes its revenge by contributing to your kid becoming overweight.
4 Of Mice And Men
The same study was also performed in the lab with mice. It has been seen that the greater mice are exposed to light, the lesser is their inherent ability to burn out fat. This is yet to be tested on humans but offers a good sign towards fighting out the problem of being overweight. For decades, scientists have tried to tackle the crux of being overweight in kids and adults. With such a discovery as the study we discussed above, they can be on the path of achieving a breakthrough in controlling the weight in overweight kids.
