It is revealed that glaucoma is the second greatest cause of blindness in the world. After the onset of glaucoma, this eye condition cannot be cured. Researchers from the Harvard Medical School conducted a study that clearly revealed that the inclusion of green leafy vegetables in a person’s diet can reduce the chances of the most common angle closure glaucoma by nearly 30%. A group of 100,000 men and women were studied for a period of 25 years.The entire group was aged above 40 years and none of them had glaucoma at the beginning of the study. In the subsequent years, 1483 of them got this eye condition. It was found that people who had more green leafy vegetables, roughly 1.5 cups each day, had 20 to 30% lowered chance of developing the same eye condition.
5 What Experts Say About The New Finding?
The findings of the Harvard Medical School Study have been published in JAMA Ophthalmology. The American Academy of Ophthalmology findings reveal that one out of ten people detected with glaucoma eventually lose their vision.
Jae Kang, an assistant professor at the Harvard Medical School,states that the nitrates from green leafy vegetables improves the flow of blood back to the eye and thus reduces the risk of loss of vision due to glaucoma.
The participants of the study also showed a 50% reduced risk of developing early paracentral visual field, a sub type of the illness again caused by improper or reduced blood flow.Nitric oxide is a major constituent that decides the proper blood flow to different organs including the eye. Increase in consumption of green leafy vegetables implies increase in nitric oxide in the body thus ensuring better blood flow.
6 Modify The Diet To Reduce Glaucoma Risk
The new finding implies that we need to increase the intake of green leafy vegetables. Since glaucoma is a hereditary condition in many cases, people with increased risk of this medical condition may alter their diet to include more green leafy vegetables in their diet. Try to include spinach, broccoli, fenugreek and other green vegetables in your regular diet. Include sandwiches and salads with a lot of green leafy vegetables in your daily diet.
