1 Alzheimer’s disease

3 Seafood as a cure

In a study of unique nature, the benefits of seafood were weighed against the harmful effects of mercury. This study was conducted among a group of 286 people, most of whom were elderly. The respondents in the research kept food diaries and also agreed that their brains could be used for research after their death. Diet rich in fish particularly Mediterranean diet has been found to decrease the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. 4 Public participation in the study
Dr. Martha Clare Morris from Rush University Medical Centre, the person responsible for this study pointed that all respondents in this study got evaluated on annual basis. This was done so that these people could be diagnosed for development of dementia and other such neurological conditions.
5 Study Findings
The findings of this study too were interesting as it pointed that people eating seafood once a week had more mercury in their brain. However, the rate of alzheimer’s was on the lower side in such people. It also emerged from the research that brain levels of Mercury did not increase due to increase in level of seafood consumption. It was found that Mercury did not have significant effect on brain health.
Alzheimer’s genetic risk was evident in 30 percent of the population but seafood did help in brain protection in people who did not have that particular gene. The researchers also came to the conclusion that if a person suffering from Alzheimer’s disease takes moderate amount of seafood, they stand a better chance of protection from this disease in comparison to people who refrain from having fish in their diet.
Incidentally, the research also covered people from Rush’s Memory and Aging Program who died from 2004 to 2013. The average age of death of such people was around 90.
