Research says Green maps Happiness and is beneficial for physical and mental health
There are many people who just love the color green. And why shouldn’t they? It’s a positive color, the color of trees. As an emotional color green signifies, contentment, happiness, growth and of course prosperity, who doesn’t love the color of money?! But besides these assumptions and predictions about the color green, an actual study has been conducted associating positive emotions with the color green and it states that exposing yourself to green will keep you in a positive frame of mind as green maps happiness, helping you lead a happier life.
Solid evidence concluded from research has actually demonstrated that people who spend much of their time among greenery and open spaces are prone to be stress free with increased emotions of positivity.
1 Research Proves That Green Improves Memory
Till date, there has never been any comprehensive study linking green to emotionally positive responses and stress free behavior, but a California based study successfully linked positive behavioral traits after being exposed to natural surroundings where the color of nature was an infinite influential factor on the state of mind.
The research observed 60 volunteers and studied the influence, a natural experience had on the emotional levels of the participants. It deducted that in comparison to an urban environment which was restricted by many factors, being closer to nature was much more beneficial as it reduces levels of anxiety, stress and negativity within one’s mind. It also improved cognitive function and increased memory power.
2 Those Living In Open Spaces Feel Better Than Those Who Don’t
Researchers felt that further studies could well establish even more influences nature experiences may have on the brain. In Amsterdam recently, a unique comparison study provided phenomenal results to the impact of nature’s color. Volunteers’ emotional and physiological stress factors were observed when asked to look at two sets of visuals- one with pictures of greenery and natural surroundings and the other with urban structures and built-up restricted places.
A heightened cognitive response was observed in those viewing the greenery in comparison to those who were shown only urban scenes.
3 Urban People Are More Prone To Stress and Anxiety
The studies were published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health last year. The conclusions derived from the study indicated that watching a green space or even green scenery helped a mind recover from stress levels which goes to prove how greenery within urban living environment can have a positive impact on general health.
Most of us live in concrete jungles with a considerable lack of greenery. In earlier times greenery was abundant and trees grew throughout cities but urbanization has changed all this, making a concrete jungle out of every city. This also proves why modern populations are more at risk to factors of anxiety and stress related health disorders such as depression, panic attacks and the like. However, this is not the case with those living in suburban and rural areas that are exposed to nature and the increased level of the color green.
4 Being Surrounded By Greenery Makes One Happy
According to Glasgow University researcher Richard J Mitchell, exposure to green spaces could reduce stress and negativity on emotional well-being by 50 percent as green maps happiness.
If you look at nature not with your eyes but your senses, you feel natural and that’s what makes your brain process a physiological response. The reason why we are prone to stress within urban environment is simply because we are exposed to influences not in tune with evolution. Hence, being with nature and being surrounded by greenery is more in sync with our natural evolution as a species and that’s why our brain along with our senses, acts positively.

Color Symbolizes Elements of Life
Color psychology is not a farce; it is absolutely valid as an influencing factor upon our senses. Color is symbolic of various characteristics, hence we say “feeling blue” when sad or “in the pink of health.” Even modern intelligent marketing strategies use the psychology of color on shoppers today.
Ancient cultures believed that colors symbolized harmony of existence as it also symbolized various elements of life. Green was the color of vegetation for ancient Egyptians and thus green has always been symbolized by elements of productivity and positivity.
6 Spend Time Outdoors In Your Garden or Lawn to Get a Mental Boost
Further studies have observed that green can also improve brain function in students. Workers who were exposed to a green atmosphere did not get stomach aches and other conditions of ill health. Green is perceived by researchers to be a great stress buster and increases healing in the sick.
Thus,it cannot be refuted that green maps happiness and to live a healthier lifestyle one should spend more time outdoor, exposed to the color green.
