Get rid of dandruff with these natural remedies
Dandruff isn’t just unappealing when you are wearing black clothes, but it is a serious damage of the scalp skin. A lot of people suffer from this condition and the reasons can be many – the pH balance of the scalp can be destroyed, it can get super dry which leads to peeling of small pieces of the scalp skin. But, before you reach for that anti-dandruff shampoo get to know these natural remedies.
Aspirin contains the same active ingredient (salicylic acid) as many medicated dandruff shampoos. But, no worries, you don’t have to take it orally. Just crush two aspirins to a fine powder and add it to the normal amount of shampoo you use each time you wash your hair. Leave the mixture on your hair for 1-2 minutes, then rinse well and wash again with plain shampoo.
2 Tea tree oil
Shampoos that contain only 5 percent tea tree oil significantly improve the severity of dandruff. If your shampoo doesn’t contain tea tree oil, you can add a few drops of it to your favorite shampoo and wash your hair as you always do.
3 Indian Lilac
Indian Lilac is antiseptic and anti-bacterial and is excellent in the dandruff prevention. Also known as neem, it can help reduce dandruff as well as many other hair problems like scalp acne, itchy scalp, and hair fall efficiently. Boil a handful of neem leaves in four cups of water, set it aside and let it cool, then strain the solution. Use it as a hair rinse twice or three times a week.
4 Coconut oil
Coconut oil helps in eliminating dandruff due to its anti-fungal properties. It also moisturizes dry scalp and provides relief from itching. Mix some coconut oil with half the amount of lemon juice in it. Rub the mixture on your scalp and massage for a few minutes. Wash your hair after at least 20 minutes. Repeat this two to three times a week.
5 Apple Cider Vinegar
This is one of the most popular home remedies against dandruff. It is the cheapest solution (we all have a bottle of apple cider vinegar in our kitchens) but is pretty effective too. It restores the pH balance of the scalp and stops the growth of yeast. It also works as a natural clarifier and helps clean clogged pores and hair follicle. You will need two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Add the vinegar in an equal amount of water and add 15-20 drops of tea tree oil in it. Apply it onto your scalp and massage. Rinse your hair after a few minutes. Follow this natural treatment twice or three times a week. You can also use only the mixture of two spoons of vinegar and water. It should be applied on shampooed and wet hair. Rinse well with water only.
6 Baking soda
There isn’t a kitchen in the world without a box of baking soda. It is useful if you want to get an itch-free, flake-free scalp. Wet your hair and then rub a handful of baking soda vigorously into your scalp. Skip the shampoo and go right to rinsing. Baking soda reduces overactive fungi that can cause dandruff. Your hair may get dried out at first, but after a few weeks, your scalp will start producing natural oils, leaving your hair softer and free of flakes.
You may have seen that some dandruff shampoos contain lemon. Pure and fresh lemon is always better, if you want to get rid of the annoying dandruff. Just take 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and massage it onto your scalp and rinse with water. Then stir 1 teaspoon lemon juice into 1 cup water and rinse your hair with it. Repeat this daily until your dandruff disappears. Lemon’s acidity helps balance the pH of your scalp.
The abrasiveness of the salt we consume every day, works efficiently against the dandruff flakes. Put some salt on your scalp before shampooing your hair. Massage your scalp for a couple of minutes. You’ll find you’ve worked out the dry, flaky skin. Then add shampoo and wash your hair as usual.
Garlic’s anti-fungal properties are perfect for eliminating dandruff-causing bacteria. Cut garlic in small pieces and and rub them onto your scalp. And yes, it will smell, that’s why you are supposed to rub it before shampooing. If you don’t want smelly scalp, mix the crushed garlic in a teaspoon of honey. Rub your scalp with the mix and then wash it as you always do.
